Coming back to life isn’t an easy feat, especially after floating around for seasons in a nightgown as a ghostly reminder to your children of who you were. Now, Mary Winchester back in the flesh!

We caught up with Supernatural‘s Samantha Smith at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about coming back to life, learning how to fight, and Season 12 of Supernatural.

When they called Samantha Smith for the season finale, she was sure it was the end of Supernatural. She was surprised when they asked her how much fight training she had.

“So I’ve been fight training. They sent me to weapons training. I’ve been doing Krav Maga, badly. But they’re really patient and I’ve been working really hard because I will be hunting. I will be fighting and participating. And that is not something my version of Mary has done so far,” Smith said.

Smith added that this season would be about family (as per usual with Supernatural).

It’s going to be about “exploring the deeper dynamics, learning to be a mother to adult children, and adult children learning what it’s like to have a mom that they never had. There will be a lot of soul-searching — layered exploration.”

We’re looking forward to Mary hunting, family angst, and most importantly, encountering the angel Castiel.

Supernatural returns for Season 12 Thursday, October 13th at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
