Killjoys Review: Heart-Shaped Box (Season 2 Episode 7)
I have the same reaction to Sabine that she has to Dutch — “I kinda hate that I like you.”
Even though as soon as “Heart-Shaped Box” begins you know that you cannot trust Sabine because she is most likely playing everyone, you can’t help but to like her. This was a fun element to play with, and Killjoys definitely runs with it.
You are constantly second guessing Sabine’s motives. It doesn’t help that for every shady moment, there’s one where Sabine does something to win you over, like saying sorry after killing creepy Phil before he killed her.
It’s easy to understand why D’av likes and trusts her, especially after he points out the fact that he knows what it’s like to wake up with tubes of green goo attached to him, but you also side with Dutch on a lot of issues.
Honestly, I still don’t know if I believe that Sabine wants to go to Khlyen for help. Seeing as how it is her mission to find Khlyen, I’m still suspicious of her. Do you believe Sabine wants Khlyen’s help?
Dutch: It’s Sabine in a bag.
Johnny: Yes.
Dutch: Johnny, why did you bring me Sabine in a bag?
Johnny: Not a lot of better options.
Dutch: Oh, I think when you’re in girl in a bag territory, you skipped way the hells past better choices.
My favorite moment of the hour is that last confrontation between Sabine and Dutch on Leith.
Sabine gives a brutally honest characterization of Dutch, and you instantly know that she’s not wrong.
Khlyen trained Dutch to shut off her heart, to distance herself from everyone. Khlyen trains her to kill and to work alone.
Dutch is with Johnny and D’av because they are the complete opposite of that. They aren’t afraid to open their heart, and that’s something Dutch is still working on doing.
Sabine helps us to understand Dutch a bit more and to really understand the damage that Khlyen inflicted on her.
Sabine also shows us what happens to someone when they become a Level 6. She makes the Level 6’s a little more human.
It’s fascinating to watch Sabine experience emotions she hasn’t had in decades and then hear her describe what will happen when she slowly switches back. Sabine makes it impossible to not feel for her.
I’m not a huge fan of the Sabine stalking D’av reveal because it is a little predictable, but I like what we gain from it. We now have a better understanding of 6s.
Johnny: You’re my brother, and I love you, but maybe you should think about holstering that thing — not a good track record.
Let’s switch gears and chat about Johnny, shall we?
My issue with Johnny getting caught is that he has been so careful up until freaking breaking into Jelco’s office. Did he not think Jelco would have cameras all over that compound?
I just don’t understand where his brain shut off and why. He is smarter than that. It just comes across like Johnny didn’t even consider the possibility of cameras in that hallway.
The bright side is that now Johnny’s secret mission will be revealed to Dutch and D’av. I’m glad Johnny can’t sneak around anymore, and this betrayal will test Johnny’s relationship with Dutch and D’av, which I’m excited for. Bring on the pain!
