5 Reasons You Should Be Excited About NBC’s ‘Powerless’

Previews, San Diego Comic-Con

When Powerless was first announced, we were excited but wary.

A comedy set in the DC Universe, coexisting with the other DCTV properties (mainly The CW’s Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) could either work out brilliantly or crash and burn spectacularly.

Well, we got a chance to see the Pilot during San Diego Comic-Con, and it comes out firmly on the brilliant side.

It’s funny, yes, but it’s also quirky and heartwarming and just …real. Which is not something that can be said for most (none) of the superhero shows we love.

So, here are five reasons why you should be excited about NBC’s Powerless:

5. Because this is the office comedy we’ve been waiting for since “The Office”

It’s been a while since we’ve had a workplace comedy that was just that -– a relatable look at the ups and downs of regular people doing regular work. And fine, these people don’t exactly live in a conventional world, but hey, they’re still like us!

They wonder about secret identities, yes, but they also want to be comfortable while they do their jobs, and don’t you dare touch their bagels.

We can all relate to that.

4. Because Alan Tudyk is the perfect villain

In that he’s not a villain, he’s just a supremely incompetent and self-absorbed boss who doesn’t have a clue of what he’s in for. And though there might be actual supervillains lurking around in the background of this show, that’s the type of evil we understand.

We’ve been there, right? We’ve stared at our bosses and wondered: Why? How?

And maybe we haven’t been the heroes Emily is willing to be, but we can certainly root for her as she attempts to change, not the world, but at least her work environment.

3. And Vanessa Hudgens plays the hero we deserve

She’s not your typical hero, either. She doesn’t have superpowers, she doesn’t wear revealing leather outfits, and she probably can’t kick your ass – at least, not in the physical sense of the word.

But Emily is smart and dedicated, and she loves helping people. Which is why she loves her job. Because she gets to make a difference.

Until Del shows up, of course.

It’s the typical battle of good vs evil – except this time, the stakes are not as great as DCTV has gone for before.

They are, however, much more real.

2. Because it’s about the regular people in a super-hero world

We’ve seen the world from the point of view of the superheroes before. We’ve never gotten a chance to see it from the side of the regular people inhabiting the same world they do.

This is our chance. Our chance to see the mess they make from a different perspective. Our chance to not always be on their side.

It’s our chance to gripe, to laugh, and to point the finger at the people we usually root for. And do it with a smile.

1. Because it’s a female-led comedy

There are a lot of comedies on TV, but there aren’t a lot of female-led ones.

Powerless is particularly groundbreaking in this regard, because not only is it a comedy whose main character is a woman; it takes place in a superhero world. And we all know that superhero worlds are just for guys, right?

Right?

Wrong, and Powerless is here to break stereotypes. To do funny and do superheroes. To show us the other side.

And to make us laugh at how the other half (or like, 99.7% of the population) lives.
