The Last Ship: Top 7 Moments from ‘Minefield’ (Season 3 Episode 5)

The Last Ship

Things aren’t getting any easier for Tom Chandler and the rest of his crew, and the situation back at home brings its own set of problems.

“Minefield” is another suspenseful episode of The Last Ship, and though it ultimately ends in a triumph, the journey isn’t over yet.

Here are a few of the top moments from this episode:

1. A subtle wink.

Look, this isn’t a show about romance, exactly, but those moments of human connection are still what drive it. Wolf is a character we’ve come to know and love, and it looks like there’s definitely chemistry between Wolf and Jessie.

2. Michener puts his foot down.

Poor President Michener really has his hands full, but he’s taking his role as President seriously, and he isn’t going to be pushed around. When the regional leaders try to change the rules, he reminds them of their original agreement, and he puts them in their place.

Michener: Get a handle on your people. If you can’t, and you really fear rioting, I will not hesitate to use the full force of our armed forced to maintain order in our country.

3. Wolf and Cruz volunteer.

When Green has a dangerous plan to help guide the Nathan James through the minefield, Wolf and Cruz volunteer to do it as a two-man job, leaving Green in a safer position. They tell Chandler they want to do it themselves since, unlike Green, they don’t have wives or children back home.

It’s just one of those noble moments that sets the tone for The Last Ship overall. The crew members always look out for each other, and they always at least try to do the right thing.

4. Chandler’s message to his kids.

Chandler misses his family. His wife is gone, and his children are staying with their grandfather while he’s out saving the world. We don’t often see him get emotional, and we don’t get to see him interact with his children often either, so his message to his children is that much more powerful.

Chandler: Ashley, Sam, I hope to God you never see this. But if you do, I wanted you to know I wake up every day proud of you. Please never forget that. Be brave. Be kind to each other help each other whenever you can. Listen to your granddad every once in a while. He’s a pain, but the older I get, the smart he seems to be. I wish I could have been there more. I hope you know that.

5. They intercept the torpedo and clear the mines.

Just when a plan seems like it might be working, you can expect yet another obstacle. Like a torpedo. But luckily, this crew figures out a way to intercept it, and they clear the minefield for what will hopefully now be safe passage.

6.Wolf and Cruz make it out alive.

Of course, it’s foreboding that Wolf and Cruz volunteer to do something incredibly dangerous, and for just a few minutes, it looks like they may not have made it out of this thing alive.

When they finally are found, everyone’s reaction, especially Chandler’s, makes for what is probably the most emotional moment of this episode.

7. “We live to fight another day.”

That’s what Michener says once he learns the good news that the Nathan James is out of the minefield safely. He knows that this battle isn’t over just yet, but for now, things seem a little more hopeful.

Bonus: Sasha and Chandler kiss.

This doesn’t quite make the list as a “top” moment for me, because quite frankly, I still don’t trust Sasha.

And that scene when Sasha and Chandler are talking at the end reminds me exactly of the kinds of moments Chandler used to have with Dr. Scott. I’m just not ready to buy a relationship between Chandler and Sasha.
