Pretty Little Liars Review: The Talented Mr. Rollins (Season 7 Episode 3)

Pretty Little Liars, Reviews

Another one bites the dust on Pretty Little Liars. “The Talented Mr. Rollins” is steeped in the answers we knew from the very start.

Elliot’s entire story is a lie!

There should be some vindication; a moment where we throw our fist in the air with exaltation. We were right. He’s a bad seed!

Yet, none of these reveals are rewarding. Does anyone remember when this show used to actually surprise us? Remember when we would get answers along with the Liars instead of ahead of them?

That’s what I’m missing, instead of this constant trudging behind the audience, discovering clues that couldn’t have been more obvious to someone outside of the story?

It’s the most frustrating thing about the series as of late. Particularly, when Aria suffers from a case of guilt, or maybe we should call it 20/20 hindsight.

Now that they’re onto what Elliot is doing to Ali in the hospital, she thinks she should have never agreed to marry them.

You know what Aria? We’re inclined to agree!

If Aria hadn’t married Alison and Elliot, she wouldn’t be in this situation now, with Elliot having control over the Carissimi group and her care.

Thankfully, the Liars are onto him and they’re trying to piece together how they can get to Ali. Then again, this is after they put her in this position in the first place!

This whole episode drags on in this fashion with the Liars slowly uncovering clues that should have been obvious from the beginning.

After the events of “Hush, Hush…Sweet Liars” and “Tick, Tock Bitches” it felt like Pretty Little Liars was on a new track, but since then, the show has done nothing but backslide.

The only part of this episode that feels like the show is going back to its old momentum was Elliot’s death. Yes, just as the liars figure out his game, they crash into him and send him through the windshield.

The macabre scene is similar to Ian’s death in the belltower back in the first season and gives us a bit of insight into who is going to be in the grave the Liars were digging in “Tick, Tock Bitches.”

While this gives us a new level of intrigue, it doesn’t say much for the show as a whole.

The characters aren’t learning and this episode just shows that intelligence doesn’t necessarily increase with age and life experience.

Watching them cover up Elliot’s death could be something great or it could be the show striking the same cords it has for the last couple seasons.

Time will tell, but the Liars need to start forward thinking or this is going to get old fast.
