Preacher Review: Finish The Song (Season 1 Episode 9)

Preacher, Reviews

Preacher‘s season finale is coming up next week, and the stakes are higher than ever. Jesse has to find a way to get God to show up for Sunday prayers, and he’s got to deal with the Saint of Killers at the same time!

One thing I noticed, is that this week’s Preacher spends an unusual amount of time trying to screw up all the leads. It appears that both Emily and the Sheriff now have blood on their hands.

It looks as though there isn’t a single person in Annville who’s completely innocent. Everyone has done something bad, and it looks like the town’s retribution is nigh.

Although the real question is, can Jesse really get God to come down to church? According to the comics, he shouldn’t succeed. Hence the quest to hunt down God and make Him answer for his crimes.

But God isn’t going to be Jesse’s only problem.  Don’t forget the stabby Seraphim who got released by the sheriff. Not to mention the Saint of Killers and Odin.

“Finish The Song” does a great job of establishing relationships. We find out that Jesse did actually put out Cassidy when he was burning. And it’s fairly obvious what Emily really thought of Miles.

Despite their many shortcomings, Fiore and DeBlanc continue to be an entertaining duo. The show makes it look like DeBlanc is dead. If the Cowboy really is the Saint of Killers, then that is true.

It’ll be sad to see DeBlanc go. His interactions with Fiore will certainly be missed. Not to mention the endless comic relief they offer. Some parts of the episode feel like an ode to their relationship.

And then there’s Tulip. She’s finally tracked down Carlos and it looks like Carlos is in for some torturing. We know both Tulip and Cassidy are meant to survive Annville’s destruction.

But the relationship between Tulip and Jesse is stretching to the breaking point. As if it wasn’t awkward enough, Jesse’s phone call made it even more so.

On the other hand, Tulip’s dead set on making Carlos pay. If Tulip makes it back to Annville, I can’t see how she survives.

All in all, we’ve got a masterpiece of a setup here. I think the finale will definitely be something to look forward to as Preacher is finally laying down the groundwork for the rest of the series.

Stray Observations:

  • Going to hell isn’t exactly the easiest thing in the world. Even without having to worry about visas and stuff, Fiore and DeBlanc had a hard time getting those tickets.
  • The show made it look like Fiore and DeBlanc went to hell to save Eugene but that wasn’t the case.
  • “We won’t be able to be together.” If DeBlanc is dead, Fiore will have a hard time indeed.
  • Odin appears to be involved in Jesse’s escape since Jesse used his pen to escape.
  • That repeat montage about the cowboy’s story took up a good 15 minutes which is about the only flaw in the episode.
