Wayward Pines Review: Sound The Alarm (Season 2 Episode 5)
This season of Wayward Pines has been a bit of a mess so far.
Over the past few episodes, they have been messing around with dystopian plot lines and the ongoing war between Jason and Ben. On the other hand, “Sound The Alarm” succeeds by bringing back some of the mystery that made the show so great back in Season 1.
In the last episode, the show was hinting at Ben’s death, and they are still continuing to tease us about it. Obviously, I think that Ben is pretty much alive since he’s supposed to have quite an impact on the struggle against the abbies.
But really, all things aside, the show is trying really hard to regain some of the old magic, and it seems to be working. The mystery that surrounded Ethan Burke’s arrival in Wayward Pines is recaptured as we explore Rebecca’s backstory and the mystery surrounding Ben’s disappearance.
What doesn’t add up is why Theresa is so upset about whatever she’s seen in the sack. Of course, we could assume that it’s Ben’s dead body, but I don’t really think it’s that straight-forward.
What is it that Theresa and Adam are so upset about? The tension between them seems to be stretching to the breaking point. Theresa is still not ready to forgive Adam. I think Adam is going to have to do something heroic to earn his forgiveness. If the past season is anything to go by, Adam’s not making it out of the season alive.
The other cliffhanger is Lucy’s brother Frank coming face to face with an abbie. Luckily, Jason sends help soon enough, but the abbie doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to chomp on Frank.
As a result of the encounter, though, Frank becomes some sort of hero for surviving a supposed abbie attack. And this is where this episode gets really, really dark.
Well, we had already found out about the procreation program they had at the academy when Lucy was being forced to go through it. But what happens if someone is…incapable of procreation?
That’s what we find out here as it turns out that Frank is actually gay. But like most primitive societies, being gay is considered as some sort of disease in Wayward Pines. The fact that Frank can’t procreate means that he’s irrelevant to the town and…you see where this is going don’t you?
You would think that people 2000 years into the future would be more progressive than this. It turns out that the opposite is true for the people of Wayward Pines.
On the other hand, this does bring Frank closer to Lucy. Both of them are now victims of this terrifying procreation program. I’m really interested to see where their story goes next.
As for the abbie that they caught, it turns out it’s a female, which instantly makes it more valuable. Megan is convinced that the key to figuring out the abbie’s weak spot is right there.
They name her Margaret, and Megan starts doing crazy tests on her. Yedlin on the other hand, undermines her and takes control of the research by talking to Kerry. Is it just me or is Kerry really convinced on Theo’s competence? He basically just asks and his wish is granted.
Not to be easily deterred, Megan continues her invasive tests by defying protocol.
I’d have loved to see Megan continue to defy orders but shocker: it was a plan all along as the abbies learn to use fire and start burning the crops outside Wayward Pines. Except now, they’ve got people on the inside.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they started talking at some point. They seem intelligent enough.
The main plot of the episode is Rebecca’s dark secret. We learn how she was approached by Pilcher to design Wayward Pines. Later, she realizes that the world must end for her project to be finished.
We learn that she was kidnapped, and surprise: she’s married. To Xander! Another gift of the procreation program that keeps getting more and more horrible. Theo’s visibly disturbed and from the looks of things, it’s over between them.
All in all, “Sound The Alarm” was definitely the best episode we’ve had so far this season.
With the main characters getting replaced and an entirely different atmosphere, it’s easy to see how the show can get lost, but it seems to be clawing its way back to its former glory. We might be seeing a full-fledged war between the abbies and the citizens of Wayward Pines soon enough.
