Game of Thrones Review: The Broken Man (Season 6 Episode 7)

Game of Thrones, Reviews

For a show that made its name killing characters, it seems like everyone’s coming back to life these days on Game of Thrones .

Jon was first. Then there was Benjen. And now, there’s The Hound.

To be fair, we expected all of these. We never really bought their deaths. Still, with just three episodes to go the amount of tragedy this season has delivered has been minimal.

Osha died. Shaggywolf died. Balon died.

And, as sad as the first two were, they don’t quite pack the punch of previous deaths. They didn’t leave us staring at our screens in horror.

Hodor did.

But even that was tempered by the fact that, as much as we hated his ending, we hailed him as a hero. We understood his sacrifice. Hodor didn’t die in vain, he died for a reason.

In Game of Thrones , that makes all the difference.

Other than that, though, we’ve gotten a fair amount of good news. Arya is finally free of No one; Daenerys is ready to head to Westeros and Jon is finally out of the Wall.

Not only that, we’ve gotten TWO Stark reunions, a Theon/Yara reunion and next week we’ll even get a Jaime and Brienne reunion.

So, brace yourselves. Pain is coming.

It has to.

This is Game of Thrones , after all. The show hasn’t changed. And yes, the end is near, but we’re way overdue a tragedy.

Maybe it’ll be Rickon. Maybe Tommen. Quite possibly both.

And yet, in a slow and somewhat filler episode, Game of Thrones still moved the pieces forward. John and Sansa are not exactly seeing eye-to-eye on the how to gain more recruits and/or fight a war aspects, but they’re going ahead all the same. Arya is coming home.

If she can survive the blood loss.

Which, she will. No one ever dies of blood loss in a show like Game of Thrones . If you’re going to die you do it on screen – horribly and noisily.

And, yes, The Hound is going …somewhere. We’re still not sure where, but he is ready to re-join the fight.

Three more episodes to go. At least one big battle to see. Can everything turn out just like we want it to?

We shall see. Smart money’s on no.

Smart money’s on heartbreak.

Other thoughts:

  • Please, please, please, let Sansa NOT be writing to LittleFinger.
  • Oh, damn it. She is writing to Littlefinger, right?
  • I hate Littlefinger.
  • Stop teasing me with Lady Stoneheart unless you actually plan to deliver Lady Stoneheart, Game of Thrones . I beg of you.
  • This episode was boring, and that’s not something I can usually say about Game of Thrones . With all that’s left to be resolved, though, I don’t expect the same will hold true for the next three episodes.
