Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Review: Kimmy Gives Up (Season 2 Episode 5)
Everything’s coming up roses – or is it?
After four fantastic episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, I knew I would reach the point of disappointment, and I have.
While “Kimmy Gives Up” delivers a delightful B-plot involving Titus’s singing everyone else is having their light stuff out by circumstance or expectation.
And it’s a little too relatable for me. I want Kimmy to be happy; I wanted Kimmy and Dong to develop a relationship.
I don’t want Kimmy to be so focused on pleasing Dong that she bombs her GED test!
We’ve all experienced a relationship that is exhausting; that kills our light inside, that makes us incapable of going after that one thing that made us so happy.
S0 to see a character such as Kimmy fail is heartbreaking because she wants to experience everything she was denied in the bunker. She lost 15 years of her life; she could have come out of that experience bitter, but she didn’t.
She wants to fight, and she needs to break off contact with Dong so she can focus on herself and I applaud that.
Speaking of characters that deserve applause, Jacqueline bonds with Buckley and realizes that even though she didn’t want to be a parent, she doesn’t want Buckley to be a mindless drone controlled by drugs.
She learns that it may be better to have a passionate son than to be selfish of her needs.
Perhaps my distaste for this episode comes from how we all conform and allow ourselves to be unhappy because someone doesn’t like our art or our drive or even our ideas.
And that’s ridiculous, because there are people out there who are in our corners, that encourage and admire our brains, our drive, and our singing.
Kimmy has Titus and Lillian as her people. Jacqueline has Kimmy to whip her into shape, and we all have this show slapping us in the face and screaming at us to sing more, to cut out those that don’t allow us to grow and to let our light shine no matter what.
We can pursue our passions outside of our jobs and our relationships, and some days or months are going to suck, but we can always turn to a musical or even Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to lift our spirits and remind us that happy days are here again.
