Davina Claire and Marcel talk in "Where Nothing Stays Buried." The Originals Review: Where Nothing Stays Buried (Season 3 Episode 20)

The Originals Review: Where Nothing Stays Buried (Season 3 Episode 20)

Reviews, The Originals

Another great woman bites the dust in The Originals “Where Nothing Stays Buried.” Davina’s departure comes at a time when the Mikaelson family is dealing with the aftermath of Cami’s death and the evil that is Lucien, the super hybrid.

Let’s talk about it!

Davina Claire’s death is tragic because we did not see it coming. In a world where vampires, witches, and werewolves thrive, resurrection is commonplace. This episode proves that sometimes the supernatural can’t fix all problems.

Freya and Elijah chose to betray their friends trust, because it’s the first solution to the Lucien problem, they’ve encountered in weeks. They still love Marcel and Davina, but her life is less valuable than those that have lived hundreds of years.

Isn’t that selfish of the Mikaelson family? Creatures who have experienced life and all it’s wonders, are more valuable than a girl just coming into her power, just falling in love, and just discovering who she is. It’s not fair.

For once, Klaus understands what Freya and Elijah did to Davina, but expresses regret and doubt over hurting someone so young. (Remember, Davina is not innocent.) It seems like Cami’s death has led to changes in the way that Klaus processes and reacts to threats against his family and loved ones.

Even if the danger comes from inside, Klaus would rather find another way than hurt his brother Kol; a man he’s never really cared for despite him being family. He’s taking hold of his new lease on life, and that of his family, with the power of love and unity holding at the reins.

This new solidarity within the Mikaelsons, is on the brink of destruction because of what they did to Davina and inadvertently Marcel Gerard. The prophecy is in play, now more than ever, despite their efforts to circumvent it.

The end of their family is a destiny of their own making.

What comes next is the final thrown down for Marcel against the Mikaelson family. They took away his home, destroyed his people, and obliterated any chances of him getting back Davina Claire, his daughter of sorts.

Vengeance consumes and changes even the best of men. Let’s hope that this final show down doesn’t involve the death of Marcel, the completion of the prophecy, and the fall of the supernatural community in New Orleans.

Other Observations:

  1. We are seeing a slow, but steady, return to Haylijah (Hayley and Elijah.) Klaus’ approval stems from him not wanting his family to experience the pain he’s feeling right now.
  2. The Ancestors are busy bodies who have nothing better to do then plot against their own. Instead of hurting and torturing Davina, they could have guided her back to her people. What a wasted opportunity.
  3. With the Regent dead, who is next in line for power? It can’t be Vincent because the Ancestors are irate with him. They will choose someone stronger than those before or transform another like they did with Lucien. They might even back Marcel if he becomes a hybrid.

The Originals airs Fridays at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
