Containment Review: With Silence and Tears (Season 1 Episode 4)
There are many ways to judge just how much you like a show — or even how good a show is.
I’m not talking about the show’s budget or it’s network. I’m talking about how much you connect with it. How much you’ve invested in it.
My shows range anywhere from, “I have nothing else to watch on Monday,” to a themed party whenever the season finale happens.
Another way I’ve learned to understand how much I like a show is seeing if I ship any of the characters.
And a big one: does it make me cry? Or laugh out loud?
I am so excited to announce that Containment makes me do both with this week’s episode entitled, “With Silence and Tears.”
Now, I’m not saying I called it…but I called it.
Go back to my pilot review. I said that shows usually need about three episodes to get their groove on. And what do you know? The 4th episode turns out to be great!
Firstly, let me please get my fan-girling out of the way. On this week’s episode, we get to see Jake smile!
I know, it’s shocking. But we get to see him smile, for real, and flirt… a lot! And he even gets a bit serious and talks about his demons. Honestly, it’s nice.
It’s nice to always add layers to characters to humanize them. Jake admitting to sleeping around as a coping mechanism and Katie talking about being bipolar is everything.
But Jake looking up at Katie, touching the box in between them saying, “So just don’t let me run, okay?” along with her holding the other side of the box and replying with a simple smile and an “okay,” just shows the chemistry these two have.
Seeing as these two can’t touch for a while, I have a feeling we’ll just be bombarded with a lot of sexual tension and eye-sex. Which, sure! The build up and slow burn are always fun to experience.
Katie and Jake flirting over laundry was the first time I have laughed during this series. So, bravo.
This week we get to see Jake really fall into the role of cop. For the last bit of episodes, he’s been nervous and annoyed and frustrated. He’s been thrust into a role he doesn’t want to be in but I feel like this week’s episode has him really coming into his own. His friendship (and flirting), with Katie shows that he’s not really a bad guy — or cop.
He was just… well, scared.
You know who’s not scared? Jana.
This girl is so bad-ass. I sort of disliked her in the beginning, and in my defense, she was the stereotypical girl with commitment issues and a perfect guy. But she is on a mission.
She just up and decides she needs to build a phone… and then she does. I think I may have a girl crush on her if I’m being honest, and I think I now understand why Lex is in love with her.
These two are not teenagers. They don’t need declarations and epic stories. They’re just in love. And I think for a while, I didn’t understand that because I just didn’t get them as a couple.
But this episode I do. Just hearing the relief in Jana’s voicemail and watching Lex look at her picture over and over again, makes everything click into place. They’re in love.
And Jana’s sign at the end made me tear up. Sure, I didn’t fully cry — but a tear is a great start, show.
Good job.
The only storyline I’m having trouble sticking it out with right now is Teresa and Xander’s.
While I’m all for teen love and pregnancies, everything just seems a bit scattered; not to mention redundant. A notable scene is that Xander is reunited with Teresa this episode, so he will be there for his baby’s birth.
My prediction is the baby will be immune, because we’ve heard Cannerts say that if they had an immune subject, he’d have a place to start on the vaccine.
So perhaps that’s what Teresa’s storyline is leading up to.
All in all, this week’s episode was pretty light one in comparison to last week’s. It may not have been action packed, but it did add some dynamic to our characters, and raise the stakes higher.
With Lex starting to question which side of history he should be on, I can only imagine that things will pick up from here.
It’s nice to have a good foundation down for the characters and have us all fully emotionally invested before things really break out into chaos. Don’t you think?
