Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Review: Kimmy Kidnaps Gretchen (Season 2 Episode 4)
Can you feel the love tonight? It is where we are – or at least where Titus and Michael are in Kimmy Kidnaps Gretchen!
It’s so refreshing to watch a series where the LGBT couple gets to be happy, and one hasn’t died yet.
Titus and Michael deserve to be happy. They deserve to represent a LGBT couple that isn’t an otter or a bear. They deserve to be actual human representations of a lot of couples out there in the world.
They deserve to be Pumba and Timba.
We’re better off as an audience when we can relate to those on the screen. The characterizations may be based off Lion King characters, but that is a common interest that brings them together.
It’s Michael’s innocence and unfamiliarity with gay culture that allows for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to take a magnifying glass to the society as a whole. There needs to be safe spaces outside of gay bars; there needs to be acceptance of all shapes and sizes and colors.
And most importantly, there needs to be more Titus and Michael being domestic and comfortable and not pretending there are something they are not.
Titus and Michael aside, this episode is such excellent commentary about finding oneself. The Kimmy and Gretchen scenes worked on the strengths of each character. Jimmy, fearless and ever expanding her horizons, was desperate to change Gretchen. The progression of her going from being a sheep to leading the sheep was subtly unsettling but fit well for the character.
Let’s get real for a moment. We all know that one person who allows others to run their life. But it may not be their fault it’s just how they grew up or are programmed. They may be brilliant and have an ability to lead other like-minded individuals but they won’t ever fully fit in outside of that group.
BUT that’s fine!
Everyone is a beautiful creation, and if you can find a tribe to belong to, or even lead, then rock on with your bad self, Gretchen included.
I feel that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one giant choose your own adventure story this season, and we are only along for the ride. Who knows if Titus and Michael will make it work? I hope it does! Who knows if Kimmy encouragement of Gretchen to start her own cult won’t come back to haunt her? And who knows if Lillian will ever find out how creepy Robert Durst is?
I can only stop myself from bingeing the next episode.
Can you do the same?
Other Thoughts:
- I loved the nod to Mad Men and Jon Hamm.
- Did anyone else catch Patrick Stewart voice acting?
- Lillian is a big softie. Who would have guessed?
- If 3AM is gay midnight does that mean Michael won’t turn back into a pumkin? Or does that rule not apply to Cinderella?
