The Originals Review: The Devil Comes Here and Sighs (Season 3 Episode 18)
The Originals “The Devil Comes Here and Sighs” is an elaborate ruse from start to finish. The Mikaelsons trick Lucien and Aurora, not to mention the audience, into believing that they are losing control of the situation, when in fact, the Mikaelsons have a firm grasp of what’s happening. Klaus draws Lucien in like a moth to the flame and the pompous jerk never even sees it coming.
Let’s talk about it!
Not going to lie, the ruse was a good one, too good. The entire episode is an intricately woven plan that must have emerged after Finn’s death. The Mikaelsons have seen what they could lose and plan on not making the same mistakes again. They feed into Lucien’s need for power. They let him succeed, blinding him with his own hubris. Lucien’s major flaw is that he believes he knows the Mikaelsons inside and out.
He’s certain that brute strength and their family bond has helped carry them along all these years. That’s not all they are. They’re highly intellectual creatures who have the capability of adapting to their circumstances at the drop of a dime. Lucien might have HAD the upper hand for a moment, but he’s lost the war against the Mikaelsons already. He just doesn’t know it.
It’s surprising that Lucien put everything on the line for Aurora and yet didn’t trust her enough to leave her alone with Klaus. Recording them was a contingency plan that Klaus, a person experienced in Lucien’s trickery, would have seen coming. Aurora, on the other hand, is enjoying having Klaus right where she wants him, with her. Her mind can’t see past Klaus kneeling.
Aurora underestimates those around her because she thinks that the arm candy she keeps is enthralled by her completely. Now this arm candy knows that he’s wasted years on a woman who never cared for him. Somehow that twists his mind up and sends him to Cami’s home to repay the favour to Klaus. He’ll never see that it’s no one’s fault but his own that Aurora doesn’t love him.
Lucien is getting a surprising amount of assistance from the witch ancestors. Their vendetta against the Mikaelsons is making them break free from the afterlife to do more than just watch over their dying covens. They’re under the delusion that if they help this super hybrid he’ll destroy the Mikaelsons and skip out-of-town, leaving the witches to control New Orleans once more. The ancestors have never been so wrong.
Once Lucien destroys them he’ll come after anyone that can kill him (aka the witches, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures of New Orleans.) What greater irony is there than ruling the lands of those who thought you were weaker than them and killing the ones who helped you achieve the control in the first place?
Let’s see what the ancestors do when they realise that Lucien’s not going anywhere. They’ve proven they’ll do anything and work with anyone. If push comes to shove, maybe they’ll end up switching sides and helping the Mikaelsons destroy the abomination called Lucien. Stranger things have happened.
Closing Life Lesson: Hubris destroys you even before you begin your task.
Other Observations:
- The return of Cami is a welcome one. She is no longer a damsel in distress. Instead she’s working on accepting who she is and training her butt off to protect her loved ones! Go Cami! P.S. Not even worried that Cami’s been bitten. They’ll get through this.
- Papa Tunde’s Blade makes another appearance. This makes it the third time he’s been stabbed by this blade. When are they going to destroy that monstrosity?
- Aurora’s scorned heart will be the death of her. Instead of seeking revenge she needs to separate herself from the situation and live for herself. Not for Tristan. Not for Klaus.
- Love Hayley’s honest approval of Klaus’ feelings for Cami. They have enough problems surrounding them. Let’s not add another crazy love triangle just when these two are getting along as parents and partners. On a side note, was she talking about herself and Elijah in this scene?!
- Teasing between siblings. We all saw it and it was glorious!
