Game of Thrones Death Ranking: 8 Character’s We’ve Lost
So, we’ve lost some people in Game of Thrones.
Fine, that’s an understatement. We’ve lost a LOT of people in Game of Thrones. And most of them have advanced the plot and wrecked our hearts. It’s just that some have been of the ‘I need a drink’ variety and others of the ‘I don’t think I can get up tomorrow to go to work’ kind.
And so, because our favorite show is coming back, and we’re apparently masochists, we’re going to go ahead and rank them by how much they hurt. Starting with ….
8. Ygritte. We never really completely warmed up to her, and yet her death was still tragic. Maybe it was the way it happened. After all, we knew it was coming. How else was this story going to end? But we didn’t think it was going to happen like that, we didn’t expect her final farewell to Jon. We didn’t think she could break our hearts. And she did.
7. Lady and Grey Wind. Why are we ranking two animals above a bunch of people? Well, because the direwolves were the symbol of the Starks, of optimism, of hope. As long as they were all alive this whole thing could turn out well.
And then Lady was gone. It was early, so we thought she might have been an outlier. The exception. Except she wasn’t. Grey Wind proved it. She was the rule. No one was safe. Not even the animals. And those have been known to survive even zombie apocalypses. Take that as you will.
6. Khal Drogo. Before Ned, there was Drogo. We might have had mixed feelings about him at first, but by the time he left us, we were pretty firmly on his side. He was a good man who loved Daenerys, loved his child, and wanted the world for both of them. And then fate took him away so cruelly. This was the first lesson, but certainly not the last.
5. Shireen Baratheon. It’s not that we didn’t see it coming; it’s that we didn’t want to believe it. Stannis wasn’t the type who’d burn his daughter alive for something he didn’t truly believe in.
Stannis wasn’t the man who’d burn his daughter alive for anything. He loved Shireen. He really did. And then our denial was proved absurd, ridiculous. He was that man. And when Shireen died, it’s like Stannis died with her. We couldn’t root for him. Not again.

I would go further with #4 and say the MORE you like a character, the more brutal and grisly their death will be. This show is SO MEAN. But yet I keep watching.
