Containment Review: I To Die, You To Live (Season 1 Episode 2)
The ships have sailed, y’all.
Two episodes in, and the ‘ships of Containment have sailed.
This week’s episode, entitled “I to Die, You to Live,” which is part of a quote said by the philosopher Socrates, seems to slowly be setting its pace and understanding what is and what isn’t working for them.
One thing that works? Chris Wood.
And no, this isn’t being said because of how attractive he is. I honestly believe that Jake and Katie’s story is one of the better ones in the show at the moment, and that’s probably because I feel like Jake is being set up as the unsung hero.
He’s being volun-told to take part in insane cases – like going to find another victim that may have been missed – and he’s just pissed off at Lex.
I understand that Jake is a cop – it’s literally his job to be a hero, to run towards dangerous situations. But I also feel like this could be an exception. This isn’t a man who can be tackled or handcuffed. This isn’t anything tangible. They don’t even have a cure for this virus yet, and maybe I’m wrong, but that could throw anyone off their game.
Does the academy train on how to deal with a violent outburst or quarantine? I can understand why he’s scared.
Point to Katie though for calling out his anger issues. Everyone’s scared. You don’t have to punch a wall.
But the reason why I find this story to be the most interesting is because of the obvious character development and potential OTP.
When Jake announces, albeit awkwardly, that he’s going to stay at the hospital with Katie to help with the kids, it shows that maybe he isn’t just an angry, scared cop. Maybe he can be more. Maybe he can be the hero for the people in the cordon, like Lex is to the people outside.
It’s obvious there’s some tension there and my fangirl heart hopes it’s romantic, but I do want this to play out properly. I want a slow burn… and I don’t want these two characters to just get together because they’ve been in a hospital quarantine for 24 hours.
Speaking of Lex, he may not be the most interesting character but he’s definitely in the center of the situation. It’s nice to see him talk to Jana and try to keep her calm, but one of the best scenes has to be when he tells her that he can’t tell her everything.
And by ‘everything,’ he means he can’t tell her that he’s just found out that everyone within the fences will not be brought out.
It’s expected that they die.
This is only Day 2… and it seems like by Day 13 there’s an uproar of protesting and the police do actually go in – so it’s exciting to see how all of this will pan out.
My bet is on Xander being the start of it. With Teresa inside, and Xander wanting to be with her, I can see him disturbing the peace (whatever is left of it), to get to her, and if he finds out that the plan is to leave her in there, it could definitely ignite some objection.
“I to Live, You to Die” definitely progressed the storyline for the show rather quickly. Watching Teresa’s friends get put into a containment cell is one of the scenes that definitely leaves you uneasy and some of the characters have developed quite a bit.
However, the show still hasn’t found its footing just yet. Jana is still rather unnecessary, and I really do wonder what is the point of Bert and Michiline. I would like to see some other events take place as well… or will the whole season just be our characters hiding out in uneventful buildings?
Only time will tell.
