The Originals Review: An Old Friend Calls (Season 3 Episode 15)

Reviews, The Originals

For once, Klaus’s paranoia is warranted in The Originals. His enemies are bleeding out of the woodwork and his loved ones aren’t faring well. “An Old Friend Calls” finally starts building traction on this so-called ‘prophecy.’ It’s time to separate our favorite hybrids, witches, and humans to see how they fare. Knowing this show, it’s not going to end well and someone important will pay the price.

Let’s talk about it!

Hayley is lost. Without her relationship to Jackson, she feels as if she’s flying in the wind, no landing point in site. Her only option is separating herself from it all. She leaves with Klaus because she can’t stand turning every which way and seeing reminders of her husband and just going through the motions. This has never been more true than when she looks at Elijah. Her feelings for him are as strong as the guilt.

Every vampire she kills is a way to try to compartmentalize the anger still remaining inside. None of it works, so she shuts down. It’s not an effective way to deal with things, running away, but she feels like she’s out of options. She’s spiraling and she’ll do anything to ground herself for her daughter, even joining Klaus on the road.

Cami is done with Klaus, being the victim, and not being powerful. She looks Klaus in the eye and says what she needs to say because this is about her survival. Klaus threatens that every time he approaches her for counsel. Admitting her doubts and her new feelings cuts ties with him. It shows how hard Cami is fighting to become her own woman despite being a new vampire. Training with Vincent is facing her weaknesses and preparing herself for Aurora’s return.

She is the only one, besides Vincent, who walks around with eyes wide open. She knows where she lives. Things aren’t going to be easy and the monsters put away, Aurora, will get free. It’s only a matter of time. Cami will make sure she’s ready for that day.

The Mikaelson family is a hot mess. No matter how much they try to stay united, their self interests and lack of communication, destroy them. Klaus’s enemies, his paranoia, and his insistence that he be protected above all, is selfish. Elijah does what needs to be done without trying to be happy (self-sacrificing idiot. smh.) Quite often, what he wants clashes with his brother because they don’t talk. Hayley is silent, angry, and fierce in her need to care for daughter. She would betray all of them at a moments notice if it ensures the safety of herself and her daughter. All of this is a recipe for disaster.

Let’s not forget about the two brothers that make their grand return! Kol is not faring well and endangers them all with his rabid and uncontrollable hunger. He was a psychopath in the past and it’s not going away anytime soon. Finn is going to cause all sorts of trouble because he hates his siblings, minus Freya. He’s going to extort Kol by holding the truth of his nighttime activities hostage. Or he might just go for the jugular and start picking off his siblings, one by one.

As much as we welcome the return of these dashing members of the Mikaelson family, it’s only going to get harder from here on out. Prepare yourself.

The Originals returns Friday, April 1st at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
