The Originals Review: Wild at Heart (Season 3 Episode 11)
“Wild at Heart” manages to drag us through a field of angst as a result of Tristan’s extended vacation with the fishes, Cami’s transformation, and Jackson’s death. This episode of The Originals is a great example of the Mikaelson’s not being on the same page about what’s important. The prophecy of doom and gloom isn’t going to go away because you simply ignore it.
Let’s dive in and talk about it!
The Strix is lost without their leader Tristan. Aya’s putting up a good front and finally seizing the power she wishes Elijah had given to her in the past. Jealousy grows deep in that woman and it’s visible no matter how much she tries to hide it. Davina is her newest power grab. Her loneliness and love for Kol (we’ve missed you Nathaniel Buzolic) are weapons more powerful than anything in New Orleans. The Originals use this trick as often as they can, because we can relate to it no matter who we are or what phase in life we stand in.
While Klaus is off gallivanting after Cami, as if she were the Mikaelson’s biggest problem, Elijah is trying to save the family. Once again, whatever Klaus wants is more important. He doesn’t see that their deaths (even if temporary or locked up in a box) will forever change his daughter’s life. It’s a wild shift from where he was last season as a character and upcoming father. It’s as if the writers forgot how much he fought to protect Hope and how much love he bestowed upon her. It’s a disappointment that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
Klaus sees Cami’s new existence as his ultimate chance to have his cake and eat it too. He can train her, show her the ‘right’ way to be a vampire, while still keeping the sweet nature that he’s always been drawn to.
It’s an illusion that Cami swiftly pulls him out of. She’s her own woman. She gets to make her own decisions and evolve into something new. Someone unforgettable who seeks her own justice for the ones she cares for and questions him without hesitation. Klaus can’t change this no matter how hard he tries. He hates it. It won’t be long until he starts to mourn who Cami was and who she is now (maybe when she stabs him in the heart with the pale knight!)
Now on to the shining moment of the episode, Hayley and Elijah’s talk at the end. She’s not over Jackson at all. He haunts her every waking moment and makes her feel guilty for feeling love for Elijah. He also makes her feel like his death is her fault. She is part of a family known for pain and suffering of the ones closest to them. By marrying Jackson she took away his chance to have a normal love and life.
It’s not her fault, but she needs this moment to grieve and have someone just listen. Elijah’s silent support shows us and Hayley that he’s in this for the long haul. He’ll wait until she’s ready and help carry her pain through the loss her husband.
Now that’s the kind of man anyone would want by their side!
