Tell-Tale TV Picks of the Week: Laugh out Loud Moments from New Girl, The Magicians, Supernatural, and more!
This week in TV, we entered another world on The Flash and a mental institution on The Magicians. While Team McCall focused on getting Lydia and escaping Eichen House on Teen Wolf, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine gang tried their hand at Escape the Room. There was a lot of battles being fought this week. Some were battles for power, like on The 100 and Arrow, while Supernatural, Agent Carter, and Legends of Tomorrow simply continued fighting their seemingly never ending battle.
Below, some of our writers discuss their picks.
Funniest Moment
Lizzie: Debbie, Stewart and Dean meet with Gillian, the therapist, on The Grinder. Maya Rudolph is a wonderful guest star, but it’s the interactions between Debbie, Stewart and Dean that make this scene great. Lowe and Savage have more chemistry than half the romantic couples on TV, and Mary Elizabeth Ellis is perfect, no matter who she’s supporting. The Grinder can usually be counted on for laughs, but this week they really, really hit it out of the park.
Jessica: All of Agent Carter was delightfully funny this week. I absolutely loved the inclusion of Rose on the secret mission how hilariously funny she can be when sweet talking the scientist and taking down the bad guys. Give me more Rose and less Peggy getting injured any day.
Christine: The entire storyline of the Escape Room on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. How funny is this ensemble? Anytime that Captain Holt gets his feathers ruffled, I laugh. But he’s best in these moments, when he’s trying to be casual, but he just can’t. I’d say that he, Gina, Hitchcock and Scully definitely built some good teamwork this week.
Lyra: Dean and Sam playing ‘rock, paper, scissors’ in the middle of a hunt on Supernatural. People are literally getting their hearts ripped out their chests and everything’s going to hell in a hand basket. But here are these two playing a children’s game to decide who goes where. What makes it even better are the looks of absolute concentration on their faces. This is more than just a game to them. These are two brothers who are going to hold this over the other’s head for ages to come. The true meaning of family.
Caralynn: Schmidt’s habit of miming the drum solo from Drumline when he has trouble processing his emotions on this week’s New Girl. Actually, all of Megan Fox’s introduction as Reagan, the gang’s new temporary roommate, was phenomenal. I’m not sure how much of her deadpan was a character choice and how much was Megan Fox being fairly unable to move her face post-Botox, but it totally worked. I love her dynamic with the group, so different from Jess. She’s like the anti-Jess.
Allison: Quentin singing Shake it Off by Taylor Swift on The Magicians. I could not stop laughing. I mean actually watching Quentin sing and dance was fantastic, and then there was the fact that the rest of the mental institution was joining in. And last but not least, Penny showed up and was super upset that this song had entered his brain once again. It was HILARIOUS. I can’t get over Quentin dancing in the doorway to try to keep Penny from leaving.
Ashley: Leonard and Penny crashing Sheldon and Amy’s live episode of Fun With Flags. Their interruption came complete with confetti and ridiculous costumes.
Character of the Week
Lizzie: Iris West(Allen?) on The Flash. I’ve always liked Iris, but I’ve never felt like the show has given Candice Patton a chance to really and truly shine – at least until this week! This week we got to see Earth-2’s version of Iris, and is she a kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, loving wife and daughter BAMF or what? When I grow up, I want to be just like THAT Iris West(Allen).
Jessica: Marcia Clark on American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson. I’m not going to lie that I’m obsessed with every character Sarah Paulson plays, but ACS is giving her the chance to shine – something I haven’t seen since she played Lana Winters. I loved watching her struggle with the public’s perception of the infamous Bronco chase, and the realization that they are all pretty much screwed when it comes to getting any justice was mesmerizing and heartbreaking at the same time. Sarah can do so much with her screen time, and I feel as if I’m not watching her but the real Marcia Clark all over again.
Christine: Rose on Agent Carter. Get Leslie Boone her own spin-off STAT. Rose killed it in her first field mission and proved that she’s more than worthy of bigger tasks for the SSR.
Lyra: Stiles Stilinski on Teen Wolf. He kept going no matter what came at him in his efforts to finally get Lydia out of Eichen House. He worked with Theo even though that man is obviously evil with a pretty jaw, carried her weight when Lydia couldn’t walk, and covered her face when she blew out all the windows. After everything they’ve been through, he comes through for her without question. Let’s not forget the ending. The way he begged for her to just open her eyes spoke of desperation and longing to see his pack member survive. If they’re going for the Stydia slow burn then they’re doing a great job!
Caralynn: Lexa on The 100. Her fight with Roan was epic. It was so well choreographed, and I was legitimately nervous throughout it even though I was about 90% sure they wouldn’t actually kill Lexa. Also, the move where she killed Queen Nia with that spear… that was excellent. And smart. And it resulted in Roan not dying, which I was very yay about!
Allison: I think I’m going to have to give this one to Penny on The Magicians. It’s no secret that he doesn’t exactly like Quentin. I would describe their relationship as occasionally hostile. However, when Quentin called to him, Penny got past his anger and realized that Quentin was in serious danger. Not only did Penny help get Quentin out of his own mind, he also gave Jules a piece of his mind for what she did to Quentin. Penny did a lot for a guy he doesn’t really like.
Ashley: Meredith Grey. Ellen Pompeo’s performance on Grey’s Anatomy was absolutely phenomenal this week. After being brutally attacked, she wasn’t able to hear as she watched her friends assess her injuries. Through weeks of recovery, she couldn’t hear or speak, but the audience was still clearly able to see every emotion she was feeling. Seriously, give this woman an Emmy!

Quote of the Week
Christine: Rebecca’s self-loathing song on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
“You ruined everything you stupid bitch. You ruined everything you stupid, stupid bitch. You’re just a lying little bitch who ruins things and wants the world to burn. Bitch. You’re a stupid bitch. And lose some weight.”
Lizzie:
Scully: “Back in the day, didn’t we ever come across a way to just wish someone back to life?”
Mulder: “I invented it. When you were in the hospital. Like this.”
Scully: “You’re a dark wizard, Mulder.”
Mulder [laughs]: “What else is new?”
My shipper heart. It both broke and soared at this admission, and at the complete and utter tenderness in Mulder’s expression as he utters the first line.
Jessica:
Jarvis: “You know, these adventures, they’re only enjoyable if you return from them, Miss Carter.”
Because I never thought in a 100 years that Peggy Carter would actually be injured or in danger of dying. Peggy may be a badass, but she’s also undeniably human and fragile just like everyone else. My heart leapt out of my chest when she was hurt, and I cried when she was ok. I will never ever forget that Peggy isn’t invincible again.
Lyra:
Felicity: “Maybe Thea and I can make T-shirts. We could join a club.”
No matter what comes Felicity’s way she bounces back on Arrow. Her father broke her heart, lied to her, and had ulterior motives to all of his actions. Somehow our bae sprung back and was able to make a joke. She’s the kind of brave and sweet person I’ve always held in high regards. Without people like this in the Arrow verse, it’d be a brooding, angst filled hour.
Caralynn: Mine’s also from Arrow.
Malcolm: “I’ve been holding off telling you this for years, Oliver. You’re very handsome, not especially bright.”
Despite the fact that Malcolm is now firmly in “bad dude” territory, rather than that shade of grey area he was inhabiting before, John Barrowman knows how to deliver an insult/quip.
Allison: Mine’s from Lost Girl.
Kenzi: “Guys, I’ve been gone for five minutes and Dyson’s turned daddy, Bo’s daddy got the welcome Magneto cell, and Dyson has hunky, yummy, hold-no-pecs son?”
I have missed Kenzi so much. No one can recap the craziness like she can. I’ve missed the banter, the sass, the heart to hearts, and just everything that Kenzi, and Ksenia Solo, bring to the table. It’s a shame she left at the end of the hour.
Ashley: I loved this one from The Big Bang Theory
Penny: Now is that a smart thing to say on a holiday that’s basically national sex night?
Leonard: I’m sorry. You’re pretty. I’m stupid.
Mostly, I just love this because it made me laugh, and The Big Bang Theory pulled off a really fun Valentine’s episode that reminded me why I love Penny and Leonard as a couple.
