Teen Wolf Review: Lie Ability (Season 5 Episode 16)

Reviews, Teen Wolf

Part two of Lydia’s rescue from Eichen House delivers on everything we were hoping for in the previous episode of Teen Wolf. In “Lie Ability” we get a little bit of romance (it’s there and not going anywhere), McCall Pack kicking ass, and the Chimeras joining in. The fact that they don’t muck up things like we initially thought points to a better chance of taking The Beast down.

Let’s talk about it!

Stydia (Stiles and Lydia) is something that has been in the works for years. What makes them unique is that their relationship is rooted in friendship. Even if they never get together, the bond between them is rock solid. He will always find her and she will always help him. The smallest moments in this episode are examples of how close they are. He works with Theo to find her, helps carries her weight when she can barely walk, and covers her when the windows explode all around them. His first instinct is to go for her because he loves her as a friend, a partner, and maybe one day more. Teen Wolf is for a slow burn that works, giving us small increments and making sure that this is more than a passing fancy. They are one of the cornerstones that make the McCall Pack shine.

While we’re still on the topic of Lydia can we talk about how she can never get a break? It’s a lot to ask for since this show is built on heartache and angst, but come on! This season has been especially brutal towards her. Eichen House is going to change who Lydia Martin is from now on. She is going to be wary with a desperate need to protect her pack after weeks of being able to do nothing but sit back. She knows the power of the Banshee is more useful and unique, and a danger to all who threaten her.

Liam taking on guards substantially bigger than him is hilarious and fantastic at the same time. Sure they have to acknowledge the awkwardness between him and Scott after the end of 5A. That’s what them working together signifies. But they manage to balance it out with fun moments like this that remind us everything isn’t doom and gloom…even in the middle of a crazy rescue mission.

Despite Theo’s best efforts to separate the Chimeras from Scott’s Pack there is blending in this episode. Malia is the hardest to bend to someone’s will, yet she helps a Chimera in return for one of them saving Kira’s life. When the final showdown arrives they’ll fight together, and not because Theo orders them to, but because they see that the other isn’t the enemy. The way they came to be supernatural is of no matter because they’re in it together. The next step for unification is Hayden when she breaks free of Theo. Deucalion is making sure she knows her value and opportunities in life are grander than her Alpha’s weak play for power.

Music Featured in Episode:

  • Bloodsport 15’ by Raleigh Ritchie. Plays during (slightly awkward) scene where Liam and Hayden make out and get frisky.
  • Find My Way Back by Eric Arjes. Plays when Stiles saves Lydia and we all flew out of our seats in joy.
  • To the Wonder by Aqualung ft. Kina Grannis. Plays when Lydia wakes up in the Animal Clinic and our hearts were stolen by Stydia.

The Beast is coming for everyone. Now that Lydia is out of Eichen House and the Chimeras are relaxing their animosity towards the McCall Pack it’s going to be a completely different ballgame.

Teen Wolf airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on MTV.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
