Grey’s Anatomy: 22 Essential Japril Moments
13. The time they talked about how they would raise their children.
A deaf girl came into the ER with a dog bit and April and Jackson fought over his suggestion to give the girl a cochlear implant. The fight that ensued about the little girl wasn’t about the little girl at all — it was all about April wanting to raise the kids Christian.
Well, it would have come up anyway. Best to clear the air now and make some decisions. Then it turned out April was pregnant. When Jackson tried to apologize, she simply stated that their kids where not hypothetical anymore. And so Japril began the path to parenthood. Starting with…
14. Setting up the nursery with Mama Kepner.

Jackson loves April’s mom, because she’s wonderful. He schemes with her mom to get the nursery set up with her old crib and gender neutral colors.
15. Finding out their little Buddha boy has Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
But when April goes for an ultrasound, Stephanie sees something odd on the ultrasound. After conferring with Dr. Herman and Arizona she confirms that the baby has osteogenesis imperfecta.
When Herman says the baby is cute, sitting like a little Buddha, Jackson happens to come out of the elevator and asks what Dr. Herman was talking about. So began the saddest storyline of Season 11.
16. And then “All I Could Do Was Cry” happened, and tissues were used. A lot of them.
Aptly titled episodes just seem to be Grey’s Anatomy’s gift to humanity. On “All I Could Do Was Cry,” we saw Jackson and April get their test results back.
Their baby boy has Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type 2 which was showing signs intra-uterine fractures. So, under Catherine Avery’s sage advice, they decide to induce and hold their son, Samuel Norbert Avery, for as long as he had. The episode ended with an indescribably heartbreaking scene.
17. April decided to go with Hunt to the Middle East.
After Samuel dies, April goes to the Middle East with Owen Hunt to put her skills as a certified trauma surgeon to good use leaving Jackson in Seattle. The act has repercussions for their marriage, including an ultimatum when she decides to go back. If she does, they’re over.
It’s hard not to see Jackson’s point in this decision. Not only did she leave but she extended her tour. She and Jackson were both Samuel’s parents and he needed to grieve too. The difference was he stayed while she went off on her adventure and channeled her grief into her work.
18. April fights for Jackson, because that’s what she vowed to do.
April gets back from the Middle East and ends up in quarantine. She fights with Jackson through the glass and when she is released she says that she is going fight for them because that’s what she vowed to do. The epic scene seems to come too late.
