The Originals Review: A Ghost Along the Mississippi (Season 3 Episode 10)

Reviews, The Originals

One life ends and another starts on The Originals episode titled “A Ghost Along the Mississippi.” The mid-season premiere reveals Cami’s fate, takes care of that pesky Tristan, and makes us question why we watch this show if all it gives us is pain!

Let’s talk about it (while we wipe away our tears)!

Cami’s transition is painful because the world is a better place with her in it. Her fear of her own darkness taking over is present in every move she makes throughout the episode.

To top it off, her anger at Klaus and his force feeding is a battle between everything Klaus is and that Cami has fought for. Klaus isn’t on her mind at all when she makes the decision to transition. It’s about her. Her journey won’t end sad and alone in a cemetery. She’ll make it her mission to use her power for something bigger than herself, the innocents of New Orleans. Vincent gives his blood up to her because no matter how much it pains him to lose a part of his friend he trusts her.

Jackson’s tearful goodbye is unfair and beautiful. They’re in mortal peril and his last thoughts are of Hayley and how much he loves her. Her love for Jackson is true despite the circumstances that brought them together. Pain, suffering, and loneliness is all she’s ever known. With Jackson, she had a partner, a confidant that would always have her back. Ripping it away so suddenly is like losing a limb.

And for those who think that Hayley now has a chance with Elijah, stop right there. A slow and steady separation between Hayley and Jackson is the only way that Elijah would have entered her life in a romantic sense anytime soon. Now it will be painful and drawn out as Hayley faces the turmoil of losing a spouse, a piece of her family and pack.

Tristan is a foolish man. Numbers are of no consequence to Klaus. His threats are small and useless because the Mikaelsons always have something up their sleeve. Even his abandonment is the result of years of surrounding himself with money and influence is his effort to make a name for himself. He never gains the loyalty that makes one fight for another. Taking it all away is fair payment for Hayley’s loss.

Klaus is afraid of being alone. That’s why he begs Cami to stay with him. It’s why he ignores her pleas and Elijah’s reasoning that if he cares for her, he’ll give her a choice. He wants to keep the beautiful, charming, and effervescent person she is in his life for centuries to come. Her transitioning state is his dream come true. Klaus doesn’t have to change and become a better person now; he can string her along and take his time leaving all his hate behind. It’s perfect and will make him feel the least pain or strife. It’s also very selfish of him. He doesn’t understand the reality of what’s happening and if by small chance he does, he’s pushing it aside like a petulant child for a chance.

Cami has chosen to stay. And no matter how happy Klaus is, it’s not what it seems. The woman he knew is gone, something new having taken it’s place.

The Originals airs Fridays at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.

  • I’m not sure i like this Dark Cami stuff, it’s cliche and overdone. I’m glad she’s not really dead but i don’t want a repeat of Elena’s transition story. That was awful.

Vincent is the underated MVP of the show.

Thank god Jackson is finally dead. I still don’t understand how someone so dull survived so long on this show full of interesting characters. My timeline was in a perty mood after his death, it’s always nice when the fandom come together to celebrate something.
