Tell-Tale TV Series Premiere Panels: Legends of Tomorrow
Who or what do you want to see more of?
Sage: Oh my god, Rip Hunter. GUYS. Rip Hunter. I am a massive, massive fan of Doctor Who and Arthur Darvill’s character Rory Williams. I assume there’s a healthy overlap of Whovians and Legends viewers, so the delicious irony of Arthur playing another time traveler with the complete opposite personality of the last one won’t be lost on many. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching Rip swanning about in that statement coat, being all smug about the n00bs’ preference for linear time. Since the rest of the team had made their debuts in other DC shows, this pilot was Rip Hunter’s grand entrance to savor. He didn’t waste a minute of it.
Kim: ARTHUR DARVILL. Aside from Sage putting everything about WHY I was flailing off my couch with every line perfectly, what I love the most about his performance is his confidence. I love how he carries himself as Rip. He just breezes on-screen and you just KNOW that this is an actor who knows exactly what he is doing with this role. It’s the perfect amount of cockiness with a hint of vulnerability. I LOVED the reveal of the real reasons why Rip gathered the “Legends” together…it immediately gave it real stakes and made Rip a fully formed character instead of just an arrogant and all-knowing Time Traveler. Is it premature to say it’s my favorite performance of the season? I’m trying not to let my obvious bias towards him cloud my judgement…but it is.
Lizzie: Not to repeat what Sage and Kim had to say (and I also loved Arthur Darvill), but I want to see more of Legend’s version of Ray Palmer. Maybe this version is the same version we saw on Arrow, but there, he was like a fish out of water, and here, it looks like he’s right at home. His shining moment in this episode were not his jokes, of which there were plenty, but the little moment of vulnerability in the end. I want THAT Ray. That one I can care about.
Taylah: Sage and Kim got ahead of me here, but agreed. I love Arthur Darvill (to an absurd degree) and I loved Rip Hunter. If you’ve read any interview with him talking about this show, he insists that Rip Hunter is not quite like a Time Lord, yet… he is very much a Time Lord. And I think his Doctor Who past is to great advantage here, because, much like The Doctor, he is a rebel with a cause and he knows how to play that perfectly. I like that there is an emotional depth to him and so far he is the only ‘newbie’ to this universe that has sparked some real interest in me.
Caralynn: Sara! I love Sara. I loved her on Arrow but she was so dark and her storylines were nearly always very heavy on that show. I’m really liking that we get to see a different side of her in Legends: cutting loose, dancing in bars, being the optimist and the voice of reason. I also love seeing the interactions between these very disparate characters and I want to see new combinations of characters interacting. Maybe that will make the Hawks a little bit less blah.
Allison: I’m all for more Sara and Rip Hunter! I’m looking forward to seeing Rip try to bond with all the Legends, or at least try to maintain some authority over them. He’s basically the parent of this rag tag team, and it’s just so much fun to watch. I fell in love with Rip almost immediately, which could have something to do with my love of Arthur Darvill. Like Caralynn said, I’m looking forward to seeing a lighter Sara. I’m also really curious as to how she is doing post Lazarus pit. She was kinda rushed off Arrow (which was annoying as hell), so I want to know how she’s coping.
Legends of Tomorrow Review: Pilot, Part 1 (Season 1 Episode 1)
Favorite quote/moment from the premiere?
Sage: The Sara/Leonard/Mick ‘70s dive bar fight set brilliantly set to “Love Will Keep Us Together” harkened back to the Queen zombie throwdown in Shaun Of Dead, and I’m all for that. That scene was an important equalizer, paired as it was with a really emotional Hawkman/Hawkgirl storyline on the other side. Also, I’m forever delighted by Wentworth Miller’s performance as Captain Cold, and enjoy any and all opportunities for him to be snarky and over it.
Kim: I also loved the bar fight, but since Sage waxed poetic on that, I’m going to go with Laurel and Sara’s goodbye scene. I thought it perfectly captured the relationship between the sisters and Laurel was able to both express her love for Sara and set her free at the same time. Laurel may not be my favorite character on Arrow but I’ve loved her on both The Flash and now Legends. How Arrow’s sister shows manage to use her SO perfectly while Arrow constantly does her wrong, I’ll never know.
Lizzie: All the good ones are taken! Okay, because someone had to, I loved the Sara pep-talk at the end of the episode. Mostly because, seeing Sara being the optimistic one, the one trying to convince others, was a lovely moment of character growth, and also because Brandon Routh does this face when she’s talking, like he’s a little kid that’s just been told he CAN be an astronaut, after all. It’s awesome.
Taylah: I quite liked Kendra’s goodbye with Doctor Boardman. There was a lot of emotional weight in their goodbye. Because what do you do to console someone who loves you so deeply but you cannot remember about? Your own child, of all people. It is a tough position to be in and I thought it was handled as well as it could’ve been with the short amount of time they had to do it.
Caralynn: This is hard, because I really liked each scene already mentioned. I’m torn between the Sara/Snart/Mick fight scene in the bar and Laurel and Sara’s goodbye. The fight scene was really well-choreographed and a great introduction to these three working together with their “particular set of skills.” Also I loved seeing Sara kind of show off her skills in front of these two bad guys. Because yes, Sara is a complete badass and it should be known to all. As for the goodbye between the Lance sisters, all I’ll say is Laurel better not be the one in the grave over on Arrow because I am not down to see Sad Sara make a reappearance over on Legends.
Allison: First off, I absolutely loved all of those moments, and I’m with Kim in my love for Laurel on every show but Arrow. One of my favorite moments was Stein drugging Jackson, and then the aftermath that followed. I never expected that from Stein, but it was absolutely hilarious, and it earned him a new friend in Rory. Jackson, of course, woke up right as they took off, and his reaction was perfection. I think Legends is making me fall in love with both halves of F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. a bit more.
