Firefly’s 10 Most Memorable Moments

Lists

Although woefully cut short by the network overlords, Firefly still has plenty of moments that stay with us even to this day. Here are some of the best:

5. “Jaynestown” — The Ballad of Jayne

Youtube video

It’s hard to pick a favorite moment from the funniest episode of the series. But if I had to, it would be the scene at the bar when everyone starts singing about the hero of Canton, a song most fans have memorized the lyrics to and could sing at the drop of a hat. Not only is it a catchy and hilarious tune, it relays a lot of exposition in a really clever way. It makes me wonder if we’d ever get a musical episode of Firefly had it not been cancelled. Oh, what could have been.

4. “Bushwhacked” — Interrogation Scene

Everything about the interrogation sequence between the Alliance and the Serenity crew members is gold. From Wash’s inappropriate ode to his wife, to Kaylee’s rant about ships, to Jayne’s menacing silence, the personalities of our main cast is shown in spades.

3. “Safe” — Simon And River At The Stake

It was heartbreaking when Simon stepped up to be burned at the stake with River. The entire episode of “Safe” was on ode to Simon’s love for his sister, and the ending is proof that he really would die for her. What makes this scene even more moving is that just when all seems lost, Serenity swoops in to save the Tams. We had just seen how Simon’s own father vowed to never come back for him, but here comes Mal and Zoe, big damn heroes and all, coming back for their new family members.

2. “Serenity” — End of The War

Mal believes they are being rescued at the Battle of Serenity when he hears ships coming, but when he turns around, he sees a whole host of Alliance ships descending from the sky. As all hope drains from Mal’s face, we realize that this isn’t the classic story about the underdogs winning the war. It’s a story about the people who have already lost. This scene defines Mal’s character for the rest of the series.

1. “Out of Gas” — Mal Meets Serenity

Many claim “Out of Gas” to be their favorite episode of the series, and for good reason. It’s a love letter to the ship, told in flashbacks as we see how each of the crew members originally came to join the Serenity. But perhaps the sweetest moment of all is at the very end, when we see Mal fall in love with Serenity at first sight. “Treat her right, and she’ll be with you the rest of your life.”
