4. Stannis sacrifices his daughter, Game of Thrones

We don’t even want to call it sacrifice, even though that’s how Stannis sees it. He’s not murdering Shireen, no; he’s just…eh, doing what’s necessary to ensure the throne is his. In a twisted way, he’s giving up his daughter for what he perceives to be the good of the kingdom. And the show had spent the last few episodes before this painting an image of Stannis as a noble man, a good father in such a convincing manner that, till the last moment,, we were sure he’d stop it. He’d do something. He wasn’t about to burn his own daughter alive, was he? Was he? But then again, this is Game of Thrones. We should have known the answer to that question.
3. Clarke makes a heartbreaking choice, The 100

When you think about it, it’s really a no-brainer. A whole bunch of people you don’t know and/or care about, versus your people. It doesn’t matter that you know what you’re doing is wrong, or that you understand that a decision like this could haunt you for the rest of your life, if you have to choose between your family and another person, that’s really not much of a choice. And yet, the fact that Clarke has to is still heartbreaking. Not for the people of Mount Weather, no. We didn’t really have enough time to mourn for them. If our heart is breaking, it’s because of Clarke. Because she did it, and because, deep down, we know we’d do the same.
2. Hook’s sacrifice, Once Upon A Time

Emma sacrificing herself for everyone was hard, but in a way, predictable. Emma IS the savior. That’s what she does. Hook asking Emma to kill him so they could get rid of the darkness for good? That was just another level of heartbreak. It was a man who started out honorable and turned to piracy because of grief, and then, to revenge for the same reason, finally realizing that he was a hero, he could be a hero. Not just for Emma, but for himself.
1. Jamie’s rape, Outlander

I defy anyone who actually watched that scene to tell me there was something more demoralizing, gut-wrenching, and just plain hard-to-stomach this year on TV. First of all, the scene lasted forever. Second, it wasn’t just about the physical; it was about the emotional torture, about the breaking down of a man who was always, always strong. Sam Heughan deserved an Emmy for his performance, and though he didn’t get the recognition Tobias Menzies did, for us, he was the main reason why this was both one of the best and hardest, most heartbreaking moments on TV this year.

Totally agree about Jamie and Sam Heughan.
Totally agree about Hook. I kinda predicted something like that would happen to Hook and Emma, for them to release the Darkness one of them had to be staked – but it really shook me up! I haven’t watched Outlander but I’m aware of it mostly because of tumblr. I must say #1 took my complete surprise. I’d never expect such a moment like that to happen on the show (as much as I know of which is very little), and wow – the discovery of it is heartbreaking.
