Tell-Tale TV Picks of the Week: Once Upon a Time and Scandal Leave Us Speechless

Tell-Tale TV Picks of the Week

This week on TV, Once Upon a Time dropped a huge bombshell, but it was nearly impossible to beat Olivia’s shocking decision on Scandal.

A proposal happened on Grey’s Anatomy, while Scorpion skipped right to the wedding. Meanwhile, Jessica Jones started up on Netflix, and I’m sure a good bit of the world is already finished with it. Oh, and Team Arrow debated whether or not family is worth saving, while Central City had a gorilla problem on its hands.

Here’s what our writers had to say about this past week in TV.

Most Shocking Moment

Lyra: Caroline being pregnant on The Vampire Diaries. Just when we thought things couldn’t get crazier…THIS HAPPENS! She’s undead and incapable of having children. Why did the showrunners make this move? Stefan and Caroline were the couple of this season! Now Alaric and Caroline are on the brain!

Lizzie: Hook is ALSO a Dark One, on Once Upon A Time. I expected the whole Dark Swan to lead back to Emma’s love for her pirate, but I didn’t see this coming. NO ONE saw this coming. This was equal parts shocking and heartbreaking. I consumed more chocolate on Sunday night after watching Once Upon A Time than I did during Halloween. But, since I already did Once Upon A Time below, let me add my thoughts about Olivia’s abortion, on Scandal: WHAT? NOOO. WAIT, WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? NO!!!

Ashley: Alex’s proposal to Jo on Grey’s Anatomy. I mean, maybe we should have seen that one coming, but it still surprised the heck out of me. And definitely Olivia’s abortion. Did not see that coming in the slightest. That was an amazing episode of Scandal.

Allison: I’m going to echo Lizzie’s answer. Hook being a Dark One on Once Upon a Time came out of nowhere, in the best way. I always knew that Emma would turn dark in order to save someone she loved, but I never, EVER imagined this. In order for diversity, I’m also going to throw in Sylvester and Megan getting married on Scorpion. Walter pulled such a dick move and got a court order, but I never expected they would get married behind his (and everyone’s) back.

Most Romantic Moment

Lyra: Oliver and Felicity talking about the angst in Season 3 of Arrow. They’ve gotten to a point where they can look back and joke around about some seriously messed up stuff! That’s a clear sign of a relationship that has surpassed everyone’s expectations and fallen onto solid ground. It gives hope that whatever craziness is to come on Arrow they’ll be able to handle it.

Lizzie: I tried to find another moment, but Emma and Hook’s entire existence in this week’s episode of Once Upon A Time was just ROMANCE and PAIN, so I’m going to go with them. The two actors have so much chemistry that it’s easy to believe them as a couple who would do anything – literally anything, for each other, and this week’s moments, particularly Hook reassuring her that the future is nothing to be afraid of, are going to be re-watched many, many times during the hiatus.

Ashley: Castle and Beckett take a “break for their break” to celebrate their anniversary. I’m still not buying that whole situation, but it was nice to see them together again, especially with Castle’s perfect words about never giving up on her.

Allison: Mary following Francis’ wishes on Reign. I still can’t believe he’s actually gone. Mary stayed at French court in order to fulfill a promise she made to Francis. She loved him so much that she lets France out of its duties to her and allows them to withdraw their troops from Scotland. Mary put her country in grave danger, but it was what was best for France.

Character of the Week

Lyra: Freya on The Originals. Last season she was lost, without purpose, and trying to fit in wherever she could. This season she’s working on finding herself and taking care of her family by finding Rebekah. She loves her sister (and kind of loves her brothers) and will not stop until she has her back. She’s a project in development that isn’t stopping anytime soon.

Lizzie: Sheldon Cooper, on The Big Bang Theory. I love Sheldon. He’s the best part of this show, not only because he’s funny, but because he’s the one that continually brings on the FEELS, even without realizing it. And his heartbreaking “I excel at many things but getting over you wasn’t one of them,” to Amy was such a big moment of character growth for him that I couldn’t  help but cheer. Sheldon, behaving like a normal person. Who would have thought?

Ashley: Mellie Grant on Scandal! She stood up for Planned Parenthood, literally, with by filibustering a spending bill — for 16 hours. This was a truly amazing performance by Bellamy Young.

Allison: Jessica Jones from, well, Jessica Jones. I’ve only seen the pilot (I KNOW! I am SO behind), but I already love her. When she learns that Kilgrave is back, she does whatever it takes to get money for plane ticket to Hong Kong, but she stops herself in order to save Hope. Jessica knew that saving Hope would potentially put her in Kilgrave’s crosshairs again, but she did it anyway because Jessica knows all too well what Kilgrave can do and has done to Hope.

Allison is in a love affair with television that doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Slightly damaged fictional characters are her weakness. She loves to spend her free time curled up with a cat and a show to binge-watch. Allison is a Tomatometer-approved critic (Rotten Tomatoes).
