How about that shocking turn of events?

In a Supernatural twist that I don’t think anyone saw coming, on “Our Little World,” we learn that the Darkness is God’s sister.

Suddenly, a lot of things about the Darkness make perfect sense. For one, Amara’s conversations with Crowley in Season 11 Episode 3, where her theology was mind-blowing as she asks Crowley why God makes people suffer. Another sign? Her kindness in removing others’ pain by taking their souls.

According to Supernatural‘s new mythology, God needed to choose between creation and his own sister. He couldn’t make the world without first locking away the Darkness.

That obviously leaves the newly sprung Amara feeling alone, without understanding, and now looking for revenge. It’s all the more interesting that the Darkness chose to be reborn into a child and experience growing. Amara has been throwing herself into learning about creation, all of the things that her brother has made after tossing her aside.

Supernatural has always had a way of making the demons and other dark creatures sympathetic. Amara is no different. Now that I understand her motivation, I’m almost, just ALMOST, on her side in all of this.

I’m also looking forward to finally having an appearance from God, which the show has danced around since the very inception of the angels and demons storyline back in Season 3. It seems almost inevitable at this point that we will see the man behind everything. Amara has a bone to pick, not the Winchesters, not Castiel, and certainly not Crowley. This is a family feud.

Thanks, Metatron for the heads up on Amara. At least someone knows something of worth. It also gives Castiel a chance to finally do something other than watch Netflix this season. (Though, I will admit, Castiel’s exasperated eye roll over a man’s paternity on Jenny Jones mades me laugh out loud. Also, remember Jenny Jones?)

In a joke that I tired of very quickly, Castiel’s binge-watching is finally redeemed. He’s been suffering with a form of PTSD since coming out of his Hulk spell, and he’s actually afraid to leave the bunker. It takes a lot of courage for him to leave; the chance to catch up with Metatron is worth it.

Crowley: What can I say? Fatherhood changes a man.

How did our other sidekick fair during all of this? Oh, I forgot..

Crowley is not the Winchesters’ “bloody sidekick”.

Crowley’s plan to raise the Darkness was never going to be successful. I’m still not sure if Crowley is just that stupid to ignore the Darkness’ obvious strength and intelligence or if he genuinely thought that there was a way to raise and harness her to be on his side.

The joke here is that Crowley thought that he can ground the Darkness, and that she’d go along with it. She’s everywhere. She’s unstoppable. She just broke out of her box, she certainly won’t be locked away in her bedroom.

Amara: What is happening here, between us? You save me, I save you. Why? You were the first thing I saw when I was freed, and it had been so long. Maybe that’s it. My first experience of His creation. You can’t help but represent that for me. The sweet triumph and the even sweeter folly of what He has wrought. There’s no fighting it. I’m fascinated.

What I found more disturbing than Crowley’s growing stupidity was the awkward lustful tension between Amara and Dean. If Amara had sucked just a few more souls, and MAYBE been a little bit older, their scene together wouldn’t have felt like a Supernatural parody of To Catch a Predator.

We know that Dean is connected to the Darkness, that she has some grateful affection for him, and that they are physically unable to harm one another. What comes across in “Our Little World,” feels like Amara wants Dean to be her boyfriend. I don’t know if it was intentional, or if was an accidental case of chemistry, but I felt downright dirty after their exchange.

It’s really time for Dean to tell Sam and Castiel that he can’t fight Amara. It’s obvious now that he’s powerless in her presence and completely blinded by her. We still don’t know why, but even without that knowledge, it’s enough of an issue to have me concerned.

Sam: Alright, two outta three.

I really love the moment when Sam has to morally decide whether to stick to his guns about killing demons in meat suits or be killed himself. Hey, he saved two out of three, so that’s still progress!

I also love that Dean is trying to stick to the “no kill” policy. I don’t think he’ll be able to stick to saving before slaying for very long, but his attempts to make Sam happy are noted.

Metatron: I was faking it. How hard can it be?

The phrase “faking it” returns in “Our Little World,” a phrase said in Season 11 Episode 5 by Len, who we discover has died. Once again, I don’t think it’s an accident, and I still think it’s the core problem for Dean this season. Since meeting the Darkness, and having the Mark removed, I think he’s been faking it. I look forward to this theme continuing to come back until that revelation becomes clear.
