Blood & Oil Review: Hustle and Flow (Season 1 Episode 3)

Blood & Oil, Reviews

Well this week’s episode of Blood & Oil “Hustle and Flow” is a bit of a curveball. Spoilers ahead.

Basically, Wick is ruining everything. I kinda can’t handle that I feel like the show is now attempting to give him a softer side. Are we supposed to think that he feels bad about what he did? After almost killing his father and causing another man to actually be murdered, I think it’s too late for Wick to be redeemed. I need his fall from grace to hurry up and get here. I’m hoping his accomplice is going to rat on him ASAP.

Speaking of redemption, Happ is seeking it left and right. Somehow his suspicion of Wick has turned into a new found sense of family. He’s ready to bring him in on his biggest deal, and thus, does whatever it takes to cut Billy out.

I’m glad about that, though. I think Billy losing his investment and having to start over (with a clearer picture of who Happ Briggs really is) is just what he needs to really hit it big. He’s vowing revenge and I’m thinking that’s what will push him to make the big bucks. But is he a junior Briggs? Is he destined to be a bad husband and father? I’m excited to see how this develops.

BLOOD & OIL - "Hustle and Flow" -- No longer suspecting Wick of any wrongdoing in the oil heist, Hap extends an olive branch when he brings his son in on an exciting new venture. But when Billy attempts to join the deal, tensions soon reach a boil. However, we will soon learn that this deal isn't quite as rosy as Hap promised. Meanwhile, Sheriff Tip arrests a prime suspect in the robbery, creating additional pressure for Wick. And AJ's true motives are revealed as he attempts to use his growing relationship with Hap's daughter, Lacey, as a way to undermine Briggs Oil. Also, Hap rekindles his relationship with his son's girlfriend, Jules, as the stakes of the father-son love triangle heat up, on "Blood & Oil," airing SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. Happ is also looking for another shot with Jules. It turns out that they are super in love. This is a surprise twist for sure. Side note: major eye roll at Cody’s tale of how she met Billy. 7th grade gym class? Really?

Clearly, Cody is still getting on my nerves. I feel like the show wants to make her the better investor. Like, while Billy is off losing money and punching people, she’s picking out food trucks and making deals. The only problem is, her deal is chump change in comparison to what Billy is trying to do. And they wouldn’t have lost everything if she held off on the house for just a little longer. The most annoying thing she said (this week) was in response to Billy lamenting the deal. She’s all “you provided for your family.” Calm down, Cody. You didn’t need a giant house immediately. Also, I see those new suede, over-the-knee boots you’re rocking. Where’d you get the money for them?

I really don’t want this food truck situation to be a big storyline. Too much time has been spent on it already. I want to watch drama about the cutthroat oil business, not the cutthroat restaurant business.

Even though I am frustrated with some characters (okay, really just Cody), I still am loving Blood & Oil. The pace is working now and I’m glad the Billy/Happ relationship has gotten more complicated. I also appreciate that once again we are left with some sparks that are sure to catch soon. Like Finn the flirt and the double-agent Happ’s daughter is messing around with (I mean, what is he testing the oil for??).

At the beginning of this season I wasn’t so sure about Blood & Oil, but I think I can officially say I’m on board.
