The Astronaut Wives Club Season Finale Review: Landing (Season 1 Episode 10)

Reviews, The Astronaut Wives Club

Like any summer romance, this one’s over all too soon… and sort of left my head spinning. I have so many questions! There are so many ends that need tying up! I need more time!

I’m talking about The Astronaut Wives Club, of course. This week’s finale, “Landing” was enough. But just barely. My break down of the good and the bad is below. Spoilers ahead.

Does anybody know what year it is? — It was difficult, as usual, to keep up with just want year it was throughout the episode. At times it felt like a history pop quiz. But, the level of 70’s-ness each outfit involved gave us some good clues. I wish the show had been a bit more intentional, throughout the season, in connecting events for us. The timeline got blurry too often for me.

The documentary — Although it works, the use of the documentary as a means for wrapping up each woman’s life is a bit… boring. I think a good old fashioned montage would have done the job.

The journalist — But then we might not have gotten to see Max again, which would have been disappointing. I do appreciate that the story between him and Louise is wrapped up. I love that she gets a chance to articulate that she doesn’t regret not starting something up with him. I do not love the mustache he has started sporting. Creepy!

THE ASTRONAUT WIVES CLUB - "Landing" - It's 1969, and Apollo 11's historic moon landing is cause for worldwide celebration and a high point for the Astro-families. The wives are interviewed for a TV documentary on the space program, Gordo is passed over for the next mission, and Trudy faces some big decisions about her personal and professional future. Betty finds a powerful way to honor Gus's legacy and advocate for change. In April 1970, the nation watches the fraught voyage of Apollo 13, on "The Astronaut Wives Club" airing THURSDAY, AUGUST 20 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Cook Allender) DOMINIQUE MCELLIGOTT, LUKE KIRBY

Xavier — I also appreciate that we get a tiny glimpse into the other side of the politics of the space race. I do really wish, however, that we could have spent more time with Xavier. What will happen to him? I want to know! And I’d like to see how his protests impact Annie.

Rene –– I’m pretty sure that Rene is my favorite from the season. I mean, the scene when she turns her cooking segment into a sex ed course is genius! The egg! I was pretty heartbroken by her and Scott, though. They just seemed so close to happiness.

Annie — I would have liked more from Annie. I love that she is able to overcome her stutter, but we barely get any information on that. She was such an inspiring woman. I could watch an entire season just about her life.

Betty — I also want more of Betty and her lawsuit. I really think this show could have been at least three seasons.

The other wives — Is it just me, or are some of the wives really glossed over in this episode?

Oh ya a moon landing — Another thing glossed over is actual moon landing. How did we get through so many Apollos and landings and events all in one hour?!

I was so excited about this series, and in the end I was disappointed. But, thinking back it did still deliver on many of the things I hoped it would. The nostalgia was there. The outfits were fantastic. The historical elements were interesting. I just feel like we started at a good pace and then sped and sped up until we were flying through space. I would have happily watched so many more episodes.
