The Astronaut Wives Club Review: Flashpoint (Season 1 Episode 5)
Trudy and Gordo forever, you guys! I just loved this week’s episode of The Astronaut Wives Club, “Flashpoint”. Spoilers ahead!
Trudy and Gordo forever — I’m so happy with how Trudy realizes her feelings for Gordo. I wanted her to give him a break, but I really didn’t want her to let him off the hook. I didn’t even think to dream of all of this happening while they were in Hawaii wearing leis and everything. Luckily, I didn’t have to, because this week’s episode really delivers.
‘Girl’ Astronauts — The perfect opportunity arises for their reunion this week when Trudy’s friend (who is also a pilot and aspiring astronaut) shows up with the news that she (and several other women) passed all the tests to become astronauts. In fact, they did better then the men! The only problem is that NASA requires special flight training that can only happen on military bases – where women aren’t allowed. When asked to testify about the validity of this requirement, John and Scott say that the testing is important. They try to apologize to Trudy, who responds with the best line ever when she tells them to apologize to their daughters. Best. Line. Ever.
Gordo breaks a record — So, when Gordo goes into space and is forced to land manually (something that no one has done so far), it’s clear that the other astronauts don’t think he can do it. But Trudy knows he can. And, in possibly the most romantic and justified moment of bragging ever, Gordo tells the press that he learned how to be an expert pilot from his wife. Well done, Gordo. Like I said, Trudy and Gordo forever! Also, I love that his record was broken right after by a Russian woman and that Trudy didn’t even feel bad for him.
Rene is a better reporter than Max — Speaking of inspiring women, Rene decides she’d like to work professionally as a writer. As fearless as ever, she introduces herself to an editor at a party and convinces him to meet with her. When it is clear that he hasn’t taken the meeting seriously, Rene asks him what she needs to do to be seen as a writer. He tells her to write twenty articles and she does it. But the best part is that when she gives them to him she also basically tells him to shove it. Love Rene.
Louise lets me down – Okay, I have to admit that I wanted Louise to have an affair. When we find out that Max is moving away forever, she’s presented with the perfect opportunity to have one little fling before he’s gone. She clearly considers it, but backs out even when her husband continues to be the absolute worst. She does, however, ask for what she wants by telling her absolute worst husband that she knows he’s cheating on her and that she wants him to herself. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of hope for that happening anytime soon. Even if he does, one time, smile at her and his children at a picnic. Come on, Louise!
The power of A/C – I just want to say that I absolutely love that what brings the Gemini Girls into the social circle of our original wives is air conditioning. Pretty hilarious.
This week’s episode ends with the news that the president had been shot. This is clearly a historical turning point, and it will be interesting to see how our characters move forward. As usual, I’m loving this show.

Oh my goodness, wonderful review. You hit the nail on the head with those points.
I love the show myself though the pace throws me for a loop. It has sparked in me a desire to learn more about the history of the “Space Race”. Have you looked into it at all yourself? I am super interested to learned more about the women’s issues they talk about in the show and how historically accurate it is!
