Teen Wolf Season Premiere Review: An Absolutely Insane Affair
Werewolves, and scientists, and… sleepwalkers (?) — oh my!
That’s what the two-hour, two-day season premiere of Teen Wolf brought us, and man, was it amazing!
The first hour starts off with Lydia in a mental asylum. After some very disturbing doctors try to keep her sedated, she turns completely badass, showing us moves we could not even fathom! While trying to escape, she says one thing: I need to tell my friends — they’re all going to die.
Cue cool, and updated opening credit.
This is where I got sad not seeing Tyler Hoechlin’s name.
The majority of the first episode, “Creatures of the Night” is spent watching the gang try to make it to the high school for their senior scrub event. I like seeing them all back together, and looking out for each other. I like watching Stiles and Malia make out, and Kira and Scott finally find each other in the rain. It’s adorable, and so needed after the catastrophe of last season.
What really gets to me is every single time they mention Lydia. My first thought was that they didn’t know she had been institutionalized, and the first couple of episodes would result in them finding out, and breaking her out.
But no. She meets them at the school, well and alive, and not insane, after a horrific fight with some scary looking… monster who tried to take Scott’s powers. Somehow, this monster couldn’t. And then the gang does what they are meant to do. They all write their initials on a library shelf. It is cute, and fun and, somehow, nostalgic. These are the dorks that wanted to be cool; that wanted to be on the lacrosse team. They were quirky and nerdy, and then they were pushed and shoved into a supernatural world they didn’t necessarily ask for; and now, they’ve grown up.
A tear may or may not have escaped when Scott looks at his initials, and then slowly writes A.A.
I like that the writers haven’t skipped over the fact that one of their best friends died. In too many shows, when a major death happens, there are three episodes of mourning, and then everyone goes on with their life. This little tribute is just what the show needs to kick off their season.
The first episode ends with two revelations. One is Theo, Scott’s friend from the fourth grade who wants to join his pack, because sure, I guess everyone’s just a werewolf these days.
And two: the whole season will be a flash forward! And you know what that means? It means that Lydia will end up in a mental asylum for god knows what reason! It means, that something so terrible happens that it drives her crazy, and I’m excited and absolutely terrified all at once.

The second episode, “Parasomnia” is far more thrilling than the first. While the first hour set up the season, the second one continues the plot. It revolves around a girl named Tracy — who seemingly has night terrors. She sees scary shadows when she closes her eyes, and coughs up black tar and crow feathers.
And while I still have no idea what this is all leading too, I can only guess that she’s a placement for the monster the scientists killed in the first episode.
What I love about the second hour of the Teen Wolf premiere is the emotional side of things. We get to see Stiles a little nervous about losing his friends in the first, but during the second episode, we see Stiles really step up and have Scott’s back. He questions Theo and his motives, and goes to extreme lengths to make sure Scott’s okay. Scott doesn’t understand why Stiles can’t just give Theo the benefit of the doubt, and in the best bromance scene since “Hotel California,” Stiles hastingly blurts out that he can’t trust anyone, “because you trust everyone!”
I love it.
I let out a small sigh, and let a heavy feeling rest in my heart for the human friend in a supernatural world, who has started to second guess everything, because of all the bad that’s happened to them.
And for good reason, too!
The ending scene is of “Theo” scolding his “parents” about how two of their signatures don’t match up. He’s showing psychotic tendencies, and then, he decides that a good excuse for the messy writing is that his father’s hand was broken. Shakingly, we see a hand being put forward, and Theo raising a hammer over his head.
The screen turns to black as we hear a smashing sound — and I finally let out the breath I was holding!
What the heck! Who is this Theo kid, and why is he evil?!
What do you think these scientists have planned for Tracy?
Will Stydia be a thing this season?
Please Monday! Come sooner!
Things to think about:
1. Parrish! Parrish! Parrish! Everything about him is great, but what is he?
2. Parrish and Lydia? Yes please!
3. Now that Papa Stilinski has taken off his ring, can he and Mama McCaul get together please?
