Gilmore Girls Star Edward Herrmann Dies at 71

A sad way to finish out 2014, beloved actor, Edward Herrmann, died today at age 71 from brain cancer.

You probably know him best as Rory’s grandfather, Richard Gilmore, on Gilmore Girls, but he also made appearances on shows including The Good Wife, Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, Harry’s Law, and The Practice, just to name a few.

Lauren Graham remembers him fondly, tweeting:

There are so many wonderful scenes with Edward Herrmann as Richard Gilmore– his love for the Yale football games, golfing with Rory, and helping with Rory’s school project. We could probably all use a plate of Johnny Machete and a bowl of Mock Turtle Soup while we watch a few favorite Richard Gilmore episodes:
