VisionQuest Season 1 Episodes 3 and 4 Review: Expanding Stakes and the Anxieties of Parenting

Reviews, WandaVision

On VisionQuest Season 1 Episodes 3 and 4, a larger threat looms as Tommy and Vision try to clear the air between them.

The top of VisionQuest Season 1 Episode 3, “Reboot,” immediately throws a wrench into our understanding of the series. The ominous Butcherbird Killer enters the fray as another antagonist in Vision’s journey, but it’s not immediately clear how they fit into the overall puzzle.

The show balances a few stories between Paladin hunting Vision down for a mystery client, the Butcherbird Killer, Ultron’s unclear motivations, and Vision connecting with Tommy. There’s a lot going on in just a little bit of time. The lack of clarity is purposeful at this point, but it feels like everything could easily go off the rails.

Luckily, we have Tommy and Vision’s relationship to ground us amid the ever-expanding stakes. The best stories within the MCU always have a human anchor to tether the audience, and here we get to witness a complicated father-son dynamic unfold.

Paul Bettany and Ruaridh Mollica excellently depict the nuance of their respective situations and the overarching relationship. Each plays with a push and pull between the intense desire for connection, the fear that comes from being let down, and the anger at their predicament.

On top of this, there’s also the fascinating element of having Ultron in the background, commenting on all of Vision’s decisions. Considering Vision is technically the child of Ultron, it’s an interesting way to depict generational trauma and the fear of making our parents’ mistakes.

James Spader is a formidable actor, firing off dry quips dripping with a strange melancholy. We never know if he’s egging Vision on, trying to genuinely help, or doing a weird combination of the two. It’s a delicious performance from Spader.

One brilliant moment from the episode sees Vision running every possible simulation on how a failed conversation with Tommy could have gone. When it comes to parenting, it’s so easy to wonder what could have happened if you’d only gone about things differently.

Not only is this an entertaining decision, but it gives visual life to a quandary that many parents grapple with. It humanizes Vision in a beautiful way as he navigates being a real parent for the first time.

The heart of this relationship anchors the audience as VisionQuest Season 1 Episode 4, “Malware,” takes things into zanier territory. As everything escalates, the overall heart of the series stays in focus.

Vision and Tommy’s conversation about trust is a terrific step in their relationship. Both are in a space where they can hardly trust their own minds while being forced into a life-or-death scenario with someone they barely know.

Tommy’s push for trust comes into conflict with Vision’s desire to protect him. Another common anxiety around parenting involves protecting one’s child from the truth. Is it better to be honest or protect your child’s feelings?

In this scenario, though, Vision himself needs to learn to trust that Tommy can and will handle the truth. He must also trust himself to disclose that.

Despite having little time together, Vision and Tommy’s relationship already feels lively and rich. What’s most impressive, though, is that VisionQuest allows the dynamic to hold such complications. It doesn’t demonize one over the other or judge either for their decisions.

“Malware” also brings back some of the magic of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, playing with genres of television and fitting our characters into those tropes. In particular, the exorcist to get rid of a computer virus is top-tier comedy.

Everything falls into place with the arrival of T’Nia Miller. Her mere presence elevates the stakes of the show as she carries herself with an uneasy serenity that commands every corner of the frame. Her restraint sells her presence.

Miller’s arrival shifts the show beyond a simple cat-and-mouse chase between Vision and Paladin. Something larger looms over the series in an exciting way.

Going into the back half of the season, VisionQuest has a lot of balls in the air. So far, everything feels clear, detailed, and well-established. It will be interesting to see if they are able to balance all the storylines introduced without one overpowering the others.
