Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 Review: Alice Chilton Please Stay

If we didn’t love Ted as much as we do, we would definitely agree with Alice Chilton on Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2, “Curiouser and Curiouser,” that maybe Rebecca should have hired a woman to coach the Lady Greyhounds.

Unlike Chilton, we don’t question Rebecca’s feminism or motives behind hiring Ted. We don’t have to ask if she ever considered hiring a woman because we know the answer is now. We know Rebecca was always sent on hiring one person and one person only.

And as the episode goes on and Chilton gets to know Ted, she comes to understand why Rebecca chose to bring him back.

The moment we meet Chilton, we’re immediately reminded of Roy Kent. When Keeley and Higgins struggle to name who Chilton reminds them of, it’s normal for our brains to go straight to Roy. The difference is that we’ve all come to love Roy exactly as he is.

Funny enough, Roy claims to find Chilton hilarious while everyone else finds her rude. Hello pot, meet kettle.

But the truth is that under this strong persona she presents herself as, there is someone who cares deeply about the team. They say it on the episode, whoever is involved in women’s football does it for the love of the game not the money. And that is exactly Chilton.

There is absolutely no doubt that she knows what she is doing and she’ll be a great addition to the coaching team. However, up until now, only Ted has been able to see the softer side of Chilton. The side we see when she gets emotional over the lockers Keeley got ready for the team.

Ted is able to see this because he always wants to get to know the people he works with. He does the same with the players, and we saw him do the same during the first three seasons of the show.

One of the things that Ted Lasso Season 4 has gotten right from the beginning (these two episodes) is how women’s football is treated.

The team doesn’t have a locker room until Ted and Keeley put their minds together to make it work. The press only wants to ask Ted questions about the men’s team, even though he tries to bring the focus back to the women.

The writers dig deep into the disparities between men and women’s teams when Higgins finishes reading the report and tells Rebecca that the team is not viable. If the team fails, it might drag down the men’s team as well.

But if we all know Rebbeca, we know she won’t give up that easily. She is the kind of “stronger woman” who stands up for others.

It is clear that the season will keep us on our toes regarding the future of the team and the club as a whole.

It is heartwarming to see that the show hasn’t forgotten the little things that made it so loved by fans. Ted walks into the men’s locker room and sees the BELIEVE sign is still there.

He picks the “biscuits with the boss” tradition right back up, but brings Rebecca brisket. It is nice to see that Roy tried to keep up the biscuits tradition while Ted was gone. And it’s fun to see him try new recipes that clearly Rebecca is not enjoying.

But it’s also quite great to see that the show is still as funny as it once was. Ted living above the pub and Mae offering him a beer first thing in the morning.

Roy disarming all the tricks he placed in the visitors’ locker room so that Keeley can use it. The romantic insinuations of Beard and Ted’s relationship as they behave like they were exes.

It is those details that made Ted Lasso so lovable. And, let’s be honest, if the season continues to focus on the details and the stories they know the fans love, we will be okay.
