Lucky Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Wherever You Go, There You Are

Lucky can escape her enemies but not herself on Lucky Season 1 Episode 6, “Wherever You Go, There You Are.” Her gambit to work with the FBI to buy her freedom and take down Priscilla opens some old wounds.

Now that Lucky and John are in the same place, there are no more pesky scenes done through telephones, and the show is all the better for it. The episode kicks off with a sizzling monologue from Olyphant where John tells a story about his own father and stealing from an evangelist whom his father gave money to.

It’s a great demonstration of how John reels people in and also a window into his own mentality about being a con artist. Unlike Lucky, who grapples with the morality of what they do, John sees it as a matter of survival.

It also sets up the fracture between them deepening after a shocked John learns that Lucky is the one who put Priscilla, and as a result, him, in jail in the first place. He’s furious when he learns she plans to barter the money for their freedom instead of pulling another con.

The interactions between Taylor-Joy and Olyphant are some of the best acting on the season, and it makes you wish she had had better scene partners earlier on the show. This, the father-daughter relationship, is the real heart of Lucky beneath all the blood and explosions.

After five episodes of watching Lucky struggle to survive, it’s a bit horrifying to see John still think there’s an “angle” where they can get away with the money. As Cary previously pointed out, Lucky has a blind spot for her father, but it seems now the rose-colored glasses are off.

John and Priscilla are both selfish, and both of their children paid the price for it.

The actual arrangement with the FBI is just as tense as Rand insists she won’t make a deal unless they get Priscilla and Whittaker, which is pretty much impossible since he tries to keep his hands clean. Lucky manages to convince Priscilla, but not before she tells Lucky she can’t outrun herself.

Is this whole plan going to go completely sideways? Probably. But the real question is where does Lucky land at the end of all of this?

She can’t really trust Rand, Priscilla, or her father. She’s on her own and swimming with sharks.

At least John does sort of apologize to Lucky and tell her he’s always loved her even if he didn’t always do the right thing for her. Maybe he’s not a completely bad person after all.

As expected, things go south quickly on the day of the operation with Dutch showing up at the hotel John is staying at and shooting Gates and the rest of the agents set to guard him. The audience doesn’t see who takes John, but doing the math this means Lucky is probably also about to enter a setup.

With one episode left in the season, we’ll soon know if her luck ever runs out.
