Silo Season 3 Episode 6 Review: A Return to Form

Silo Season 3 Episode 6, “The Drive,” perfectly sets the tone for the final episodes of the season.

The series is putting the foot on the gas pedal as we approach the back half of the season, and setting up quite the ending.

Juliette’s memories have returned, giving her and others an advantage, as she devises a plan to outsmart The Algorithm and explains the underground tunnels that feed into each silo to her crew. That includes how to stop The Safeguard once activated.

Meanwhile, Shirley and Knox’s relationship reaches a new depth, and Daniel and Helen’s adventures take an unexpected turn when they reach their mystery destination.

An Upper-Hand Advantage

To say that it’s nice to see the old Juliette we all know and love back is an understatement. Camille has been getting too comfortable in her new role and has seemingly forgotten that she isn’t untouchable just because she’s head of IT.

While she might be the face of the operation, The Algorithm is the one steering the wheel behind the scenes, and it’s setting up a potentially rough conclusion for Camille.

In the end, it won’t be The Algorithm that has to deal with the frustrations of the people of the silo. So, what will she do when they start gunning for her head? If they learn the truth, it’s unlikely she’ll be given any grace for her actions towards their livelihoods.

Despite all of that, though, I’d be a liar to say that her storyline doesn’t bring a sense of sorrow. Much like Bernard during his time in charge, there isn’t much room for improvisation in her current role.

Essentially, what The Algorithm says goes, and if she doesn’t follow through, she not only threatens her family, but the entire silo. It’s a rough situation for one to be in, as she must straddle the lines of moral corruption and correctness.

It’s a position that I would never want to find myself in. But, in the end, it doesn’t change the outcome of her actions. Introducing the vitamin D+ supplement into the water supply is a reprehensible act, no matter who’s making the call.

Making the Trip to Silo 17

While they might not be Juliette’s first choice, Lukas Kyle and Patrick Kennedy taking on the dangerous venture to Silo 17 isn’t necessarily a bad decision. In fact, it actually makes sense.

Kyle has studied enough of the Safeguard and the inner workings of the silo to know exactly what to look for once inside. Aside from Knox and Shirley, he’d be one of my top contenders to send out no matter what.

For Kennedy, though, the trip will be an eye-opening moment, as he’s come to believe quite the lie about the state of the world outside.

It’ll be interesting to see how his viewpoints change, especially after spending all of his time trying to convince others of the truth beyond the silo.

Will he turn on Juliette once he realizes that the beautiful, lush grounds he’s envisioned are actually desolate lands full of dead bodies?

The main question, though, is: will he be able to handle it? Kyle seems like the type to be okay, especially after spending a good majority of time in the mines. However, I don’t have much faith that Kennedy will be able to make the full round trip.

If we see the two embark on the journey, I guesstimate it could be the last we see of Patrick Kennedy.

Building a Family

Congratulations are in order for Shirley and Knox, as this episode unveils that the two are expecting a child together! It’s a surprising and exciting, but dangerous development, as the two haven’t been approved to procreate by those in charge.

The audience has highly favored the dynamic between the two, as they mesh with one another effortlessly, and that sentiment is likely only going to grow with these new developments.

One positive impact from this new revelation is that we’re finally given a glimpse of the life that Knox was privy to while growing up. With his father always being gone for work, and only around for a short time frame when he wasn’t in trouble with the law, it was only Knox and his mother a good majority of the time.

That strained relationship he held with his father will undoubtedly play an integral part in how he approaches his parenting skills, while also providing new anxieties.

Now, Knox will have to balance coming to terms with the fact that he’ll never be able to have a mature conversation with his father, or reach a mutually beneficial conclusion to their differing ways, after learning that his dad died two years prior.

With all that said, and as happy as one can be, moving forward, there’s no question that Shirley will have an instant target on her back if the news of the pregnancy is leaked. She and Knox will have to work hard to keep their secret hidden.

An Eye-Opening Trip

There’s not a lot of room for advancement in Helen and Daniel’s storyline in the Before Times, as they continue their mysterious journey of being kidnapped by a remotely controlled vehicle.

But it isn’t all doom and gloom, though, as their time stuck inside the car gives Helen a moment to break down why her journalistic integrity has been questioned all season long.

So far, there have been no substantial hints that Helen could be corrupt in any way, and her story regarding her career-defining mistake only further proves that she’s one of the good ones.

When her source on a story involving drug use by government officials is outed, Helen takes it upon herself to take the fall, essentially ruining her reputation, credibility, and career as a whole, all in the name of journalistic ethics and keeping her source safe.

It’s those exact moves that prove why Helen is a trustworthy individual, and revealed at the end to be one of the people, alongside Daniel, being allowed to help prepare the United States for a global catastrophe.

Rating a series like Silo is hard because every outing is superb, with filler episodes virtually nonexistent, making each an important addition to the overall plot. That said, I think it’s easy to say that this episode is by far the best outing of the season so far.

Stray Thoughts:

• Martha’s reaction to learning the truth about who’s making the calls is by far one of my favorite moments in this outing because of how relatable it is. What the hell is The Algorithm!? Is it truly just being powered by AI, or could it be a position manned by a person working with the U.S. government?
• As much as I’m enjoying the storyline this season, it’d be nice if the series stopped trying to force a friendship between Bernard and Martha onto us.
• The series has slowly been building up to Paul losing his cool and demanding answers by any means necessary, which I love to see. We need to see him pushing back against the status quo more and more, even if that means the occasional violent outburst.
