Silo Season 3 Episode 5 Review: The Truth Unveiled

Silo Season 3 Episode 5, “Memory,” focuses on the events that take place after Juliette’s stint in the incinerator.

After spending half the season wondering how Juliette became mayor, how Bernard survived, and pondering over other unanswered questions, the series gives fans an inside look at the secretive developments.

Unlikely Allies

Up until now, neither Robert nor Bernard has ever been an ally to Juliette or her friends. However, as the audience quickly learns, everything changes with the rebellion and Juliette’s return to silo 18.

Playing assistant to Bernard for seasons one and two, it’s evident that the decision for Camille to take over in his absence is not boding well for Robert.

At least under Bernard’s direct orders, he was given a false sense of superiority. With Camille now in charge, though, the guise of him ever having any real power is immediately stripped away. Now, he must resort to blindly following orders, knowing that the real person in charge is The Algorithm.

That leads him to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, where his goals then change drastically. We now know that Robert is the one who put the plan in motion for Juliette to become the new mayor, and faked Bernard’s death in an attempt for knowledge.

After getting past the initial shock of Robert switching his loyalties, it’s not that surprising when you think about it.

Since mid-way through season 2, it’s clear that Robert’s focus shifted to putting more protections around his son. So, with Camille’s newfound position of power, the growing target is not only on her and his backs, but also on their sons.

The only way to get around that feeling of vulnerability is knowledge, and Bernard and Juliette are the only two people in the silo who can provide that for him. Without his swift thinking, Camille would have surely found a way to get rid of Juliette before now.

Fortunately for Bernard, these new developments mean that he is indispensable. However, that doesn’t make it any less awkward that the people he once sought to kill are now the ones ensuring his survival.

Never in a million years would I imagine that Martha would be the one to help nurse him back to health. That said, it’s so nice to see that he’s sharing valuable information with her in exchange for the help.

With Martha knowing about the different channels on the radios and being able to eavesdrop on other silo’s, there’s no telling what she could uncover. And at this point, they need all the help they can get if they plan to outsmart a centuries-old AI system and bypass the Safeguard.

Thankfully, through fidgeting with the Pez dispenser she received back in season one, Juliette’s memories begin to flood back. She remembers her time with George, her adventures in silo 17, and how to prevent the Safeguard from killing everyone.

The Clock is Ticking

Elsewhere, through Paul’s investigation into Orla Kent’s murder, we finally get a glimpse of Carla in the present timeline.

After explaining the situation to her, Carla’s mind immediately begins to shuffle around. She blames herself for Orla’s death, saying that had she never made her shadow, she’d likely still be alive.

On top of her duties as shadow, Carla tasked Orla with helping figure out who had been stealing multiple years’ worth of light bulbs from Critical Supply, assuming that’s what led to her untimely death.

In addition to a murderer being on the loose, Carla informs Paul that the silo is facing a potential mass extinction, as they only have two years’ worth of light bulbs left.

Once the lights for their farms disappear, so does their food supply, putting even more stress on Paul to uncover who is behind it all.

The big question is: who would steal that many light bulbs? What use would they have for them inside the silo?

The frequency with which they’re going missing leads me to believe that this could potentially lead to us exploring another silo this season. Realistically, who else would need that many light bulbs?

The only underwhelming aspect of this outing is how little time is spent on the Before Times storyline. Rather than jumping back and forth in steady increments like previous outings, we see Helen and Daniel quickly toward the very end of the episode.

Rather than learning anything new in their world, the episode ends on a cliffhanger, as the controls to the car Daniel and Helen are driving are suddenly overtaken by a mysterious remote force.
