Cadet Series Acclimation Mil takes center stage on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 Episode 5, “Series Acclimation Mil.”
Series Acclimation Mil, or SAM for short, is one of the most unique cadets at the academy. She is a photonic lifeform. That means that, like the Doctor, she is a sentient Hologram. She is also the first of her kind to attend the academy.
SAM isn’t the first holographic character to have a major, complex role on a Star Trek show. That, of course, is The Doctor. However, her introduction has expanded the potential for these types of characters’ storylines and the franchise’s world-building.
On Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1 Episode 1, “Kids These Days,” Sam mentions that she is from Kasq, a colony of photonic lifeforms.
That suggests, likely in no small part due to the struggle of The Doctor himself, that there’s been a lot of progress in terms of rights and the acknowledgment of personhood for holograms.
Kasq is one of the most interesting contributions of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to the Star Trek world.
