High Potential Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Content Warning

High Potential, Reviews

Sometimes it takes influencers to uncover the truth. This is sort of the case on High Potential Season 2 Episode 5, “Content Warning.” The show establishes a potentially interesting exploration of content creators, the cult of it all, and its ridiculous demands.

The ABC series could have taken the show down a really interesting path for the episode. However, in classic High Potential style, it takes a bunch of twists and turns that go far away from the content house.

However, it should have stayed there. The potential storyline just felt more vibrant and could have made a statement about influencer culture.

Instead, it moves on too fast and only creates a baseline about this topic.

The characters of the content house were interesting enough to work as the main focus for this week.

Instead, the show goes a more predictable route of the protein powder scandal. It’s not that the storyline isn’t fascinating; it’s just that you can see it coming a mile away.

It’s not as exciting because it’s so predictable. This has been a constant criticism of High Potential. It has not mastered how to surprise without feeling like it came out of nowhere or being too obvious.

There is a happy medium that the show sometimes achieves.

Therefore, in time, the show will likely learn to strike this balance more. They have done it well at times, but “Content Warning” shows it has not been perfected.

This is fine because the series is still finding its rhythm.

Speaking of rhythm, we get a disruption to the group’s usual form and norm. Captain Wagner finally arrives.

It seems like for weeks, High Potential has been leading us to this moment. We knew it was coming, and it isn’t the big moment we were expecting and hoping for.

He arrives in such a lackluster way. It’s not like Captain Melon was such a big presence, but we still expected a bit more grandeur from his arrival.

However, he may play a bigger role than Captain Melon ever played. He seems more hands-on already, and he has something to prove,

Additionally, Morgan and he have an oddness in the air between them. It’s confusing if it has a hint of romance or the potential to become combative.

Kaitlin Olson and Steve Howey play it more like a romance is brewing between them. That’s something to watch for in future episodes.

It’s complicated because he’s technically Morgan’s boss, but may not be exactly due to her consultant status.

Nevertheless, the show will have to work hard to convince us to root for their romance, if it happens. It already feels inappropriate.

Captain Wagner is also already portrayed as a bit of an antagonist for this group. He took the job from Selena, Oz can’t decide what to make of him, and he’s creating some hostility among the team.

Plus, he’s a dynasty baby. That automatically makes him untrustworthy. High Potential will also have to work hard to convince us that he’s likable and needed within this group.

“Content Warning” is another all right episode. The season starts strong but has been stuck at a medium level for the last several episodes.

This one feels like it has a ton of potential but doesn’t quite fulfill its destiny.
