Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Tongue Tied

Only Murders in the Building, Reviews

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Episode 5, “Tongue Tied,” finds our trio trying to uncover more information on who works in the Velvet Room by gaining the trust of the people who work at the Arconia, which goes about as well as you’d expect.

The final moments of Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Episode 4, “Dirty Birds,” revealed that the billionaire trio played our trio by becoming investors of Wondify, the company our trio just signed with. So, you would think that “Tongue Tied” would address this curve ball that’s been thrown.

Instead, we just pick up with Charles, Mabel, and Oliver taking Detective Williams through what they had found in the Velvet Room. The only references we really get to it is through voice over at the start of the episode, and Oliver claiming that they took away their podcast.

It’s a little jarring that we gloss over this big moment because it downplays the significance of that twist. The billionaire trio are still suspects in Lester and Nicky’s murder, and as of right now, our trio can’t mention them on the podcast.

So while trying to get information out of people who work in the Velvet Room is important, it doesn’t solve the bigger issue of not being able to talk about it on the podcast. It would’ve been nice to see some acknowledgement of this, instead of moving on as if it is business as usual.

To give the show a little grace, perhaps our trio are focusing on getting proof that one/all of the billionaire trio are involved before tackling the problem of not being able to talk about them on the podcast.

Because right now, our trio doesn’t have any solid leads that point in their direction, especially since they established that the finger isn’t Jay’s.

But still, our trio having some kind of conversation about what happened at Wondify would have gone a long way.

Detective Williams is always a delight. Her banter with each member of the trio is fun, and she gives them a good dose of reality. She is also a way for our trio to learn things that they really couldn’t have on their own — they lack police resources and databases.

Williams help fill in some gaps that give our trio more context on what/who they are looking at.

By the end of the episode, Sofia has become even more of a person of interest along with Lester’s widow, Lorraine, which is unexpected.

The spouse/partner is always a primary person of interest for a reason, but we really hadn’t had any reason to suspect Lorraine. It’s too soon to tell what this development means, but it is good to see another link between Nicky and Lester’s murder.

Stray Thoughts
  • I’m growing tired of Sofia’s children. Them not being able to take care of themselves despite being adults is not funny.
  • Charles and Sofia’s date is an odd experience, but this is on par for Charles.
  • Maybe one day someone in the building will love Oliver.
  • L.E.S.T.R. being pushed off the building is hilarious.
  • I love that we continue to explore new areas of the Arconia and meet new people who live/work there.
