Peacemaker Season 2 SDCC Trailer Teases Move to James Gunn’s DCU, Rick Flag Sr.’s Revenge, and Multiversal Madness

News, Peacemaker, San Diego Comic-Con

Chris Smith might be in over his head for what’s coming since he’s now on the run, but fortunately, he’s not going to be alone.

At San Diego Comic-Con, James Gunn unveiled the official trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 during the show’s Hall H panel. The second season of the DCU series is set to release on Thursday, August 21, on HBO Max.

While the original teaser for Peacemaker Season 2 hinted that Chris Smith will be making his way to Gunn’s new cinematic universe, the official trailer reveals much more. From returning friends to old foes and parallel Earths, there’s certainly a lot to digest.

The first part of the trailer sees Smith and his friends celebrating another victory following their win from Peacemaker Season 1 Episode 8 “It’s Cow or Never.” However, despite his affluent lifestyle, he still seeks to be a full hero rather than an antihero, which he divulges to Emilia Harcourt and Leota Adebayo.

Unfortunately for Smith, not everyone sees him as the hero he is, as Rick Flag Sr. plans to hunt him down, using A.R.G.U.S.’s resources to do so.

It’s also revealed here that this potentially takes place in the DC Extended Universe, as Flag Sr. mentions that his son, Flag Jr., was killed. This was seen in the previous Suicide Squad movie, The Suicide Squad, before the cinematic franchise rebooted.

However, in an attempt to better himself, Smith reveals that he has a dimensional portal that can send him to another universe: James Gunn’s DCU, which is a far cry from Smith’s universe.

With Season 2 following the events after Superman, Smith’s initial move also connects to the Justice Gang’s investigation into Smith, which was in another teaser. Also in this world, Harcourt actually lives a happier life as compared to her DCEU counterpart.

Back in the DCEU world, Harcourt, Leota, Economos, and Vigilante are forced to find a way to bring their Smith back to their universe. However, their mission will be difficult as the trailer also sees multiple universes coming into play.

Furthermore, Peacemaker Season 2’s synopsis teases that Smith’s discovery of the DCU will “force him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.”

Back in Season 1, Smith confronted one part of his past back on Peacemaker Season 1 Episode 4 “The Choad Less Traveled” and Season 1 Episode 7, “Stop Dragon My Heart Around”.

“The Choad Less Traveled” saw Smith forced to face his father, August Smith, aka “White Dragon,” a white supremacist who supplied his son with everything he needed. Meanwhile, “Stop Dragon My Heart Around” actually saw Chris fighting his father, killing him in the process.

However, in the Season 2 trailer, it’s revealed that August Smith might be potentially alive. Whether he’s in a flashback or an alternate self in this universe, it’s certain that he’ll be another threat that Chris will have to confront once more.

Peacemaker Season 2 sees the return of John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. New cast members include Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.

James Gunn wrote all episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 and directed three, including the first episode. Gunn, Peter Safran, and John Cena serve as executive producers. Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Althea Jones also direct.
