Suits: LA Season 1 Episode 12, “Angry Sylvester,” begins tying up loose ends in its penultimate outing.

Rather than introducing any significant new conflict to span over future episodes, “Angry Sylvester” works to start tying a bow on the season.

Stuart faces his fears with the help of a familiar face, Rick and Ted team up once more, and Erica comes to a hard realization. It’s not one of the most thrilling outings, but it does well to prep the audience for a final goodbye.

A Worthwhile Realization

Erica and Ted are partners for a reason: they’re both stubborn, hard-headed, and arrogant to a point. When it comes to something they feel passionately about, there’s nothing less than a metaphorical hit in the head to make them open their eyes to other routes.

Ted and Erica’s partnership is put on the hot seat when Erica confides in him about going after Nicole Kidman. Instead of being supportive, Ted encourages her to stand down and avoid going after her because Kidman is Samantha’s client.

Despite their previous run-ins early in the season, Samantha and Ted have steadily worked to mend their fractured friendship. And after showing up to help him celebrate an anniversary Eddie held near and dear to him, Ted can’t risk beginning any new conflicts with Samantha.

It’s no secret that Ted can be slimy, so it’s not a jaw-dropper when he goes to Samantha to warn her about Erica. Instead, Rosalyn’s response to his actions is the more impressive moment in the situation.

Rosalyn: It’s one thing to make peace and another to undermine your own people. And I’m getting tired of watching you shoot yourself in the foot and pretending you’re not the one holding the gun.

Ted will forever be his own biggest enemy, and until he realizes that to succeed, he has to count on those closest to him, he’ll never be the man he wants to be. Rosalyn’s abruptness opens his eyes, leading him to perform one of his most vulnerable acts all season: tell Erica the truth about Eddie and Samantha’s connection to the situation.

Thankfully, Ted’s openness finally allows Erica to drop the veil between work and personal life, something she has desperately clung to.

Opening her eyes to the truth that you can be passionate about work while still looking out for the essential moments in your life finally leads her to hear what Leah has been telling her all along.

A Life-Changing Decision

After finally coming around to giving Ezra Bridgers scripts the proper attention they deserved, Rick sees the potential in one. The passion behind his exuberance for the script derives from his drive to get Dylan Pryor her next lead role, but it’s an eye-opening experience for Leah.

After spending time really thinking about her options and where she wants to go in life, she realizes that she’s where she needs to be. Despite Rick’s enthusiasm for the script, her dedication to authenticity makes her decision.

Leah came up with Ezra Bridgers because she wasn’t confident enough in her writing to showcase it publicly, meaning it’s not enough to upend her entire life. She works hard and does her job well, which is precisely why Erica gifts her with her own office after opening up about where she is in life.

It’s nice to see Erica no longer battling Leah because of her ability to have emotions and the willpower to look out for herself.

The Perfect Cameo

Time to get Litt up! Louis Litt makes his much-anticipated cameo, and it’s nothing less than perfect. His return to the Suits universe brings him face-to-face with Stuart at their “hostility mitigation” outing (aka anger management), providing some gut-busting-worthy moments.

My personal favorite is Louis proudly announcing the name for his penis, Angry Sylvester, and Stuart asking for Louis to nickname his. It’s certainly a moment one could not anticipate.

Aside from the number of phallic-related jokes, Louis’s crossing paths with Stuart brings comfort to both. After getting off on the wrong foot, the two are able to get past their differences and bond over their shared fear of disappointing their families.

In a heated group counseling session, Louis reveals his insecurities about protecting his family, something Stuart relates to. After bringing Louis comfort, Stuart’s walls fall, and he later tells the threat about his family.

It provides a real bonding moment that works to push Stuart past his coping issues.

All of that said, it wouldn’t be canonically Louis Litt or Stuart Lane if they didn’t bring the comedic relief before the ending moments. In their ending exchanges, Stuart explains how he and Ted think Harvey Specter is a god, further agitating Louis and his inability to escape Harvey’s shadow.

I’m eager to see where the series will take us in its final outing, and whether we’ll be left with a lingering cliffhanger or be provided with a sense of closure. One thing is for sure, though, it will be an emotional hour as we’re surely bound to get the final moments of Eddie’s life.

Other Thoughts:

  • I hate that we have never learned any real background information on Rosalyn. And now with the cancellation, we will never get it.
  • Rick backing away from Dylan’s kiss has to mean something! Honestly, if the series ends with Erica and Rick not overcoming their fears and becoming a couple, I’ll be sick.
  • It’s tiring that the series can’t adequately fit all female characters into one episode and properly juggle their storylines. There is no reason Amanda should have been absent from this episode.
