Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 22, "Vows" - (l-r) Marina Squerciati as Officer Kim Burgess and Patrick John Flueger as Officer Adam Ruzek Marina Squerciati on the Burzek Wedding and Why it Made Sense for Chicago P.D.

After years of build-up, Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek finally tied the knot on Chicago P.D., but many fans were less than impressed with the attention given to the Burzek wedding in the season finale. Though actress Marina Squerciati understands that disappointment as much as anyone, she also says it’s fitting within the show.

Along with Steven Weber from Chicago Med, Marina Squerciati participated in a One Chicago panel during the ATX TV Festival to discuss their characters and recent storylines. During the panel, Squerciati shared her reaction to the Burzek wedding, including her own personal disappointment in the way it was handled and the reasons it made sense for Chicago P.D.

The wedding, which viewers had been looking forward to for quite some time, was only shown briefly on screen. And despite the episode title being “Vows,” the vows between Burgess and Ruzek weren’t shown.

“On the one hand, yes… do I wish it was more about Burzek and less about Voight / Chapman? Yes. Does that sound rude and selfish? Yes. But I don’t mean it that way, because it was, unfortunately for Burzek fans, done perfectly for Chicago P.D.,” Squerciati said.

“Because it is not a wedding show,” she continued. “Chicago Med could do that, and Chicago Fire. So they did it in the most perfect way for P.D., and Burzek fans, including myself, especially my mom — she’s like, ‘you told me to watch it!’ — felt bad. We deserved more.”

“And I wasn’t covered in blood, so that was a win,” she added.

Squerciati also confirmed that there were never any vows, despite the episode’s title. “It wasn’t enough, but you know what, that will leave you wanting more for a couple of seasons.”
