Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 17 Review: The Wave

Doctor Odyssey, Reviews

The end comes with a tsunami. Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 17, “The Wave,” approaches the season’s endgame. As predicted, this involves some sort of romantic resolution for the mundane Avery, Max, and Tristan love triangle.

Are the writers not bored with this cycle?

On Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 16, “Double Booked,” Max declares his love for Avery. “The Wave” starts with her reprimanding him for such a bold and selfish move. It’s rough waters for them because she wants a clean break from the Odyssey, and is looking towards her future.

His love just complicates things. Not wanting to feel left out, Tristan finds out what happened and is now heartbroken about her making him the second choice yet again.

Fair.

Now, going into the upcoming Doctor Odyssey season finale, we’ll likely see her choose between these men. She has chosen herself many times, but still keeps getting locked into this triangle. We imagine the series plans to give us some resolution by having her pick one of them.

All signs point to Avery and Max ending up together by the curtain’s close.

Additionally, Doctor Odyssey has not been renewed or canceled yet. With the uncertainty of the series’ fate, we imagine the writers want to offer some sort of closure in case viewers never see these characters again.

That should mean her picking one of them. Nevertheless, that doesn’t necessarily mean the love triangle ends completely. If the show returns for a season 2, we may expect a reset on the love triangle.

Additionally, Avery (hopefully) still picks medical school. Therefore, even though she may decide on her love life, she has to eventually put it on hold for a while or give it less attention.

The love triangle is key to this ABC dramedy, so probably the main aspect of the season finale.

The tsunami storyline allows for some interesting cases of the week, especially the man who wants his stepdaughter to love him. We witness a pure caring storyline. Doctor Odyssey’s obsession with romance sometimes works, but it’s usually in these small storylines, instead of the main one.

This is one of the many throughout Season 1 that have endeared us to these one-episode and done families and love stories.

Doctor Odyssey tends to go over the top with the medical emergencies. Therefore, we expect a lot more insane activity and behavior on “The Wave,” especially involving the Tsunami. The series could be saving that for the finale, but it’s a tame episode.

Most of the incidents feel realistic and aren’t overly intense or dramatic. Personally, it makes me appreciate the series a bit more for showing some restraint.

That’s a noticeable thing about the second half of this new show. It has seemingly worked out so many of its initial glaring issues. That also makes me wonder how much it could improve with a second season.

However, the fate of Doctor Odyssey isn’t looking great, so all we can hope for is a satisfying season finale. “The Wave” is a good start.

Stray Thoughts
  • Tristan’s scene with the Odyssey Karen is one of the funniest moments on the show thus far.
  • Tristan has every right to be annoyed with Avery, and I hope she doesn’t pick him. He deserves better.
  • Doctor Odyssey’s guest stars and cameos are still one of my favorite parts of it. I love seeing Jonathan Bennett and Jim O’Heir.
  • Jim O’Heir is so natural at playing these slightly annoying guys who are just nice dudes.
  • We already know O’Heir and Bennett’s characters are married, but I think that’s supposed to be a surprise next week.
