Chicago P.D., Reviews

Kiana Cook proved herself worthy of joining the Intelligence Unit when Voight approved her transfer. However, during Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 19, “Name Image Likeness,” she goes the extra mile to prove she still deserves that spot.

Even though there is a rocky beginning when she confronts Voight about how he does his job, it gets resolved when they catch the killer. Cook should know better by now not to question Voight’s methods. While she might not have gone so hard on Ruby, he does what needs to be done to get her talking.

Ruby ends up betraying both of them. Neither Voight’s threats nor Cook’s softer approach has the repercussions they expect. Ruby is so blinded by the toxic relationship she is in that she can’t seem to do what is right.

Cook believes that to fit into the unit, she needs to prove she is a good cop. To prove herself, she decides to take Ruby on as her confidential informant. While it doesn’t work out as she hopes, it does give her a better understanding of what it’s like to work with criminals in this unit. It’s different from patrol.

However, what Cook needs to fit into the team is to get along with them, and she has been doing this from the beginning. She worked with Ruzek first, proving that even on his worst day, she was a good support system. She continues to be great working with him.

Kevin and Kim already see her as part of the team, trusting her instinct and working alongside her as if they had been doing so for many years.

But the biggest proof that she is already in is her connection to Torres. She was the only one to ask why he took a week off, and since his return, she has been on top of him, making sure he is okay. She is the one driving him to the precinct and encouraging him to stay in line.

The two of them have a special connection. Maybe it’s because of where they grew up or their similar pasts. Whatever it is, it’s an interesting relationship to explore; one that hopefully won’t become romantic. The beauty of this show is the camaraderie that comes from working together.

There is still much to learn about Cook. We have only scratched the surface of the relationship with her mom. After her final call, it seems she is only just opening up to the possibility of having a relationship with her.

It’ll be interesting to see if she decides to connect with her mom beyond the help she once needed for a case. It is clear that the two of them are very different, but she is still her mother. And something tells us Kiana does want that relationship.

Another thing that might catch viewers’ attention is Cook’s sexuality. While this topic has never been discussed on the show and there have never been openly queer officers on the team, when she goes undercover with Ruzek it is obvious that she is a queer woman. Whether this is just for her undercover character or her reality is yet to be discovered.

It would be great for a show like Chicago P.D., that has been around for so long, to finally broaden its horizons and give life to a queer character.
