Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 12 Review: Sophisticated Ladies Week

Doctor Odyssey, Reviews

COVID is still a very sensitive subject for many. Therefore, it’s understandable to have some hesitations and reservations going into Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 12, “Sophisticated Ladies Week.” The series hasn’t shown much care with so many subjects.

However, it goes in the right direction in the end. At first, it seems like the show may trivialize COVID and try to make fun of Max for his precautions. Starting the episode with medical professionals and crew members not enthusiastic about the booster sets the wrong tone.

Additionally, Tristan being so careless about having COVID four times just loses a bunch of good will he builds over Season 1. However, these responses show varying opinions on the vaccines and boosters.

Doctor Odyssey tries to pick the middle ground with this topic until the end. Max’s precautions prove correct, but it still seems like the show thinks he’s a little silly for doing so much.

On the other hand, it’s nice to see Max leading by example. The series makes a statement on how the needs of one shouldn’t outweigh the needs of many. It’s a bold and true statement.

COVID episodes are not always going to be viewed favorably. It reminds people of something that shook and continues to shake many lives.

Some will also not like the idea of sacrificing their comforts to be more helpful towards others. Nevertheless, “Sophisticated Ladies Week” seems to present the most empathetic conclusions while also acknowledging why people may not want to follow COVID protocols and not just from being inconsiderate of others.

Doctor Odyssey does an adequate job of making a statement while offering varying perspectives.

This episode also explores some other polarizing medical topics. Captain Robert and Heather are having a child. It’s a risky pregnancy given her age. However, both seem excited about this twist.

It’s unexpected but could become an interesting topic, depending on how the show approaches it. It’s rare to see a woman over 50 dealing with an unexpected pregnancy on a television show.

This greatly overshadows Avery’s pregnancy storyline. We’re fully invested.

We’re also introduced to a cancer survivor who discovers her cancer has returned. She decides to enjoy her remaining time on earth without seeking more treatment.

This bold decision breaks the heart of her boyfriend. People choosing to live without treatment isn’t out of the norm.

It’s actually becoming a common thing on television shows and movies. However, it remains effective.

Your heart breaks for these people.

Doctor Odyssey still has a lot to improve, but the second half of the first season continues to show more promise in terms of writing, acting, and chemistry.

The young man-older woman pairing creates a convincing romance that makes it easy to sympathize with their story. Then we remain team Tristan and Avery, but Max telling people he was taken, despite his complicated status with Avery, shows he’s not just a slutty doctor.

“Sophisticated Ladies Week” is an overall fine episode that doesn’t offer anything revolutionary but continues the season’s upward trajectory in terms of the quality of the episodes.

Stray Thoughts
  • Max didn’t look sad seeing Avery and Tristan — could the trouple become real?
  • So glad the show didn’t make Heather miscarry. Really want to see this story develop.
