Reviews

Landman Season 1 Episode 1, “Landman,” co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, wastes no time immersing us in a cutthroat world where the stakes are as high as the oil rigs towering over Texas’s boomtowns.

The series promises a hard-hitting drama filled with fortune-seeking characters, gritty storytelling, and high stakes. This modern-day tale of roughnecks and oil barons features Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, a rugged, insightful character whose personality is stamped on each intense scene.

Character introductions are a strong point in Landman Season 1 Episode 1. They set the stage for the show’s intricate dynamics.

Jacob Lofland does a great job playing Cooper Norris, Tommy’s son, bringing a fresh sense of innocence and optimism that stands out against the more hardened crew in the oil fields. His interactions with Michael Peña’s character add a nice touch of humor and lightness.

The humor that plays out in the show gives us a break from the heavier moments. Plus, the scenes at the “Babes N’ Brew” bar show off the unique vibe of boomtown life, mixing fun and toughness to keep the series well-rounded.

Tommy Norris really is the heart of the show, representing both the risks and the appeal of the oil industry. Tommy is fearless and has insider smarts that help him get through a cutthroat world giving us a peek into his vulnerabilities, making him more than just a tough guy.

On the other hand, Angela, played by Ali Larter, is a key player in Tommy’s personal life. How she shows up in a tense FaceTime call sets the stage for their complicated relationship, giving Tommy a personal storyline to latch onto. It would be great to dive deeper into their shared past, as that could add to their tension.

Jon Hamm plays a powerful oil executive, but his introduction feels rushed, which takes away from his character. Since Hamm is such a big name, the show could really benefit from letting his role develop more.

Landman is trying to show the lives of the working class and the wealthy elite in the oil industry. If they let Hamm’s character unfold more slowly, it could add more depth to the show’s upstairs-downstairs vibe, enhancing the storytelling already set up with the main characters.

The first episode hits you hard. It doesn’t shy away from hard-hitting scenes, including a violent sequence involving a jet loaded with drugs landing on a privately built road only to be bulldozed by a semi-truck.

The shocking image establishes the stakes of this world, where life and death are constantly in balance. These moments, along with the jarring “bullet to the head” drive home Sheridan’s knack for capturing the danger, lawlessness, and tension of life in these modern boomtowns. This relentless pacing works well to launch the show, immediately bringing us into an atmosphere of chaos and ambition.

Landman has a gritty and realistic vibe, but there’s room for more moments that dig into the emotional toll of the oil business.

With a talented cast, Sheridan has a great chance to develop the characters further, moving beyond their tough exteriors. It would be interesting to see the moral dilemmas in their jobs offering a deeper look at power, ambition, and the mistakes of being human.

The episode hints at the oil boom’s impact on the environment and the economy.

It would be great to see the series dive into these topics more directly, looking at how it affects communities and people on both sides of the economic spectrum would really add something to the show. It could turn Landman into more than just a story about personal ambition; it could also reflect on an industry that changes entire regions.

The premiere does a great job of setting up a challenging but fascinating world with excellent performances and a vibe that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The pacing might feel a bit off at times, but it makes a solid start for a series that gives us a rare look at the Texas oil boom.

If Sheridan can juggle the fast pace with solid character development and deeper themes, Landman could stand out. It tells the story of ambition and survival in boomtown Texas, capturing a distinctly American vibe with plenty of grit, charm, and an excellent cast.

  • My mouth dropped open for nearly 30 seconds during the last scene. So unexpected.
