Arcane Season 2 Episodes 1-6 Review: A Harrowing and Beautiful Beginning to the End

Reviews

Netflix’s and Riot Games’ Arcane was a true game-changer when it first premiered in 2021. Its story, centering around two sisters with a complicated past, gave fans one of the most astounding narratives for a video game adaptation. Arcane Season 1 felt personal as Vi and Jinx’s strained relationship intertwined with the grander scheme of things with Caitlyn and Jayce.

However, those dynamics really shift thanks to Ambessa, who takes a prominent role in these episodes.

Given Arcane Season 1’s devastating ending, it’s expected that there’d be huge changes. The death of Caitlyn’s mother has deeply impacted her, instilling this doubt in Caitlyn that she isn’t fit to be Piltover’s guiding light. As such, her relationship with Vi is at risk as the two hunt down Jinx, who’s coping with Silco’s demise.

All of this gets wrapped up in an intricate game of “cat-and-mouse”, which begins with Episodes 1-3.

The first episode (and a half) mostly serves to re-establish where everyone is at, with those in Piltover dealing with the fallout. Yet, unlike similar catch-up episodes, where there’s too much ground to cover, “Heavy is the Crown” keeps itself concise. Sure, it has to tread through war politics to build context, yet the calm and action-packed moments come together beautifully.

By keeping a strong focus on Caitlyn’s newfound pain, it’s fully emphasize the emotional struggle she shares with those like Vi. In Arcane Season 1, there were undertones between the two that suggested this heartfelt blossoming. With these episodes, we finally get those “CaitVi” moments with subtlety and sincerity.

While I can’t go deep into the details of those moments, each scene Vi and Caitlyn share has this naturality to it. Both of them know the sacrifices they have to make, whether it be straining a familial bond in Vi’s case or becoming something you hate in Caitlyn’s. Through those small animated movements and powerful ambiences, it makes you feel further connected to these two.

So, when things truly shift for Vi and Caitlyn in “Finally Got the Name Right”, the impact it has is all the more tremendous. This is especially so given the introduction of a new character: Maddie Nolan, who seems to incidentally influence Caitlyn later on.

As for Jinx, she’s in a conundrum all of her own making. For one, she has apprentice in Isha, a young non-speaking character, who literally falls into Jinx’s hands on “Watch It All Burn”. Fortunately for Jinx, she’s managed to let go of this rivalry she had with Sevika since they’re both focused on Zaun’s uprising.

It does make sense to put Jinx in a position of power given her reputation now, yet this alliance with Sevika felt odd. Given where everyone’s status in the finale of Arcane Season 1, it was maybe paced too quickly. However, it’s more understandable why they’d do so when Season 2 Episode 4 and Season 2 Episode 5 come around.

Speaking closely on Jinx’s relationship with Isha, it initially begins as this unlikely relationship given Jinx’s tiredness for everything. However, watching Jinx grow this motherly fondness for Isha really captures that sympathetic trait Jinx barely revealed in Arcane Season 1.

By having Jinx see herself in Isha like how Vander viewed her as Powder, it increases the stakes ever higher. Plus, it gives Jinx a sincere motivation to fight for herself and, in a way, Vi as well.

Jinx wants Isha to not be transformed by world ruled over by the dictatorial Ambessa and the forces of Noxus. She wants to save that youthful innocence she has in herself and for her sister Vi. Using Isha as both an emotional and narrative “keepsake” for Jinx is perhaps what makes her arc in Arcane Season 2 really compelling.

Of course, there’s been this lingering theory surrounding “Vanderwick” given the tease of Singed in “The Monster You Created”. While I can’t speak on that in-depth, I can say that this theory is further explored on Season 2 Episode 4 and Season 2 Episode 5. Those episodes not only answer that question, but also do so in such a heartbreaking way.

As for those like Jayce and Ekko, they’re surprisingly put on this track of scientific exploration beginning on Arcane Season 2 Episode 4. Watching the two interact and trying to figure out the secret of Hextech and the Arcane (yes, there’s a namedrop!) was definitely refreshing.

It might still have the tonal murkiness with Victor’s involvement, but Heimerdinger happily brings an uplifting tone to this storyline.

Speaking on Viktor, his transformation into this cult-like leader definitely rounds out his arc from Arcane Season 1. Viktor being influenced by the corrupted Arcane through these visions of Sky, his former assistant, serves as an interesting side story. However, it takes a little backseat as the focus is placed on the Jinx-Vi familial dynamic.

Of course, Mel and Ambessa’s mother-daughter relationship is extremely pivotal to Arcane Season 2. The two get a few interactions in “Heavy is the Crown” and “Finally Got the Name Right”, which emphasize the distrust the two have now. In a way, Mel and Caitlyn switch personalities with Ambessa influencing Caitlyn, providing us with those painstaking CaitVi moments in the end.

Overall, Arcane Season 2 excels in concluding its poignant and action-packed story about sisterhood and family through Riot Games’ fantastic world. With all the fan-favorite moments and answers to narrative threads we’ve been wondering about, this final season should satisfy all your needs. Arcane Season 2 simply shows how much care Riot Games and Fortiche Prod have put into expanding this animated universe and hopefully, they can continue to do so.
