Preview — Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 5: Lex Luthor Returns to Smallville

The worldwide revelation that Superman is alive brings Lex Luthor back to Smallville on Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 5, “Break the Cycle.”

The promo video shows Lex reacting to the news from a Dailey Planet article written by Janet Olsen. It’s unclear whether Superman & Lois will stick to DC lore or offer its own spin, but Janie is famously Jimmy Olsen’s sister in the comics.

The scenes from “Break the Cycle” also show Lois taking extra steps to stop Luthor. It’s challenging to tell who she is talking to in the promo video, but it seems like Lois is trying to appeal to them and let them know that Lex is dangerous. Lois tells the mystery person, “He is going to do something terrible to my family.”

Clark knows that threat is massive, telling Lois, “I can’t just hide.” That pressure to show up for his family could lead Clark to the Fortress to get some advice from his mom. The titular hero ends the promo video on this chilling note: “Luthor is going to send his monster. We are not safe here.”

While Clark and Lois figure out their next steps, “Break the Cycle” will follow Jonathan as he tries to balance his personal life with his responsibilities. 

The photos also tease that this episode will feature some flashbacks between Superman and Lex — and Lex’s daughter Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Henstridge, who has directed multiple episodes, steps back behind the camera for “Break the Cycle.” As revealed on Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 2, “A World Without,” the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress also plays adult Elizabeth. Only time will tell if Henstridge will appear in front of the camera, too.
