Matty and her grandson continue to pursue their undercover mission at Jacobson Moore on Matlock Season 1 Episode 4, “The Rabbit and the Hawk.” But is Matty’s laser focus causing her to lose sight of what’s best for Alfie?

Thus far on Matlock, Matty’s mission to expose the person who buried documents that could have taken the drugs that killed her daughter off the streets has been a family affair. Her grandson, Alfie, and her husband, Edwin, have been eager accomplices, with Alfie providing much-needed behind-the-scenes tech support.

Edwin has been more moral support as Matty and Alfie take the lead. There have been some tiny hints that Edwin may have reservations about what Matty is doing. Still, he has only been an encouraging cheerleader so far, never questioning any of her decisions.

That changes on “The Rabbit and the Hawk” when Matty interrupts Alfie’s school day to get his help. This seems to be a red line for Edwin, who calls Matty out for taking Alfie’s involvement in the case too far.

Disrupting Alfie’s education also seems like an evolution for Matty. She hasn’t hesitated to involve her grandson in her plan, but we have seen her prioritize his education. Specifically, on Matlock Season 1 Episode 2, “Rome, in a Day,” Matty insisted that Alfie focus on his homework first.

Does Matty’s willingness to pull Alfie out of class suggest that she is losing perspective as she gets in deeper at Jacobson Moore? Or will this turn out to be a one-time thing because of the specific situation Matty finds herself in at the moment?
