Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 4: Returns

Reviews, Slow Horses

Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 4, “Returns,” clues us in on some of the details surrounding the assassins for hire, how David’s connected, and maybe why David’s being targeted.

The introduction of Frank Harkness’ (very angry) employer adds another layer to this mystery of the season.

More importantly, he puts pressure on Harkness, creating some urgency in taking out these remaining people who can tie whoever this guy is to West Acres, and it looks like David and Chapman are those people.

While we don’t know what went wrong with West Acres, it’s clear from how David and Chapman have been targeted that Frank runs a pretty tight ship. This midnight deadline could cause the bad guys to rush and be a bit less discreet, resulting in some action-packed final episodes of the season for us.

There’s always something fascinating about watching people become more and more desperate as a deadline looms over them. It’ll be a little less interesting because we don’t know Frank or his horde of assassins at all, but it should still make for great television.

On top of that, there’s River’s connection to the bad guys, which significantly raises the stakes.

Chapman recounting David’s prior involvement piques our interest already, especially once he mentions that he was sent to pick up a woman who ditched Chapman as soon as she could, but River’s discovery that he might have been at that house as a kid is shocking.

It raises so many questions while also making us even more invested in this mystery. With Chapman brutally murdered and David’s memory not being what it was, the only person who might be able to give River answers is Frank.

But, of course, Frank also wants to kill River, so it will be a fun chat if River decides to try to approach the guy. And let’s be honest, that’s exactly something that River would do.

Personally, the most exciting thing to happen during this episode is that River is back in London!

He should be reuniting with Slough House soon on Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 5, “Grave Danger,” and I cannot wait to have everyone back together again. The Slow Horses are the highlight of the show, and I’ve missed their camaraderie and bickering.

While this season has been stellar so far, there hasn’t been enough of the Slow Horses working together, getting into all sorts of mischief. Let’s hope the final two episodes of the season can make up for lost time.

Also, shout out to Emma Flyte for finally besting a member of Slough House. She’s learning, and I’m proud of her, but I do hope that River somehow manages to escape before they make it to the Park.

Stray Thoughts
  • David is stressing me out.
  • I really love Diana and Jackson’s relationship. They’re such an odd pair, but they know how to deal with each other.
  • Chapman’s death might be the most violent thing that’s ever happened on this show.
  • It’s nice seeing Catherine back in Slough House.
